MAGISTRATE'S COURT. A sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held at Lyttelton yesterday, Mr H. A. Young, S.M., presiding. Michael McGuirk, charged with procuring liquor whilo prohibited, was fined £2 and 10s costs, in default seven days' imprisonment. He was allowed until March 19th to find the money. Herbert Pring and Johannes Sandvig were charged with being unlawfully on licensed premises and were fined £2 and 10s costs, each, in default seven days' imprisonment. Sutherland Gow McKenaie, charged with leaving the driver's seat of a motor-car before taking proper precautions to see that it could not move, was fined 10s, and 10s costs. David Carey, a watersider, was charged with being in arrears with a maintenance order, made in England, towards the support of his wife and two children, for 30s a week. The Magistrate said that the accused should be made to realise the seriousness of the position, and sentenced him to one month's imprisonment. In his defence Carey stated that ho had written to his wife, asking her to join him in New Zealand, but she had refused. He had saved £23, which he intended paying in towards maintenance, but in view of her refusal he had spent it. Ernest Spencer Harper, charged with obtaining by fraud the sum of £1 from Leonard Greenaway, was iin«4 £2 and 10s costs, in default 14 days' imprisonment. Ho was also ordered to refund the money. Judgment was given for Hollis and Brown, builders, against William Patrick Cain, letter-carrier, for £92 10s, and costs, balance of a building contract. Defendant claimed that the work was not according to specification. Sale of Work. A sale of work will be held in St. John's Sunday School to-morrow afternoon. A jumble sale will be held in the Methodist School to-morrow afternoon. Tire Brigade. The Lyttelton Fire Brigade has received £3 towards its social fund from Mrs E. Shepperd, in recognition of the brigade's servicos at a recent fire. Golf. The Diamond Harbour Golf Club will open its Beason on Saturday, when a putting competition will bo held for Borough Councillors. Swimming. The Lyttelton Men's Swimming Club will hold schoolboys' championship events at Corsair Bay on Saturday afternoon. The events will include a 25yds race, 50yds race, and a diving championship; also a 33 1-3 yards handicap event. Yachting Club..

Convened by tlie Mayoress, Mrs F. E. Sutton, a meeting was held in the Lyttelton Borough Council Chambers on Tuesday to consider the possibility of increasing the Canterbury Yacht and Motor-Boat Club's accommodation at the club house, in view of the holding of tho Sanders Cup and Corn well Cup contests in Lyttelton next year. On behalf of the club Mr A. T. Sinclair said that it was suggested that a number of dances might bo held as a means of raising funds, followed by a fair. The following officers were elected:— Chairman, Mrs P. E. Sutton; secretary, Mr K. Priddy; committee, Mesdames W. T. Lester, G. L. Ostler, H. T. Banfiold, T. Maher, J. Stanley, H. A. Ehind, G. A. Curtis, H. Herdman, D. Sinclair, H. Sinclair, F. Hobbs, M. Sillers, and A. Crisp, and Misses M. Collins, M. Newton, and P, Hobbs. Lodge Meeting. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal City of Norwich Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., was held on Tuesday, when N.O. Bro. M. J. Scott presided. Sick pay amounting to £64 3s 4d was passed, for payment. It was decided to make a donation to the funds of the Plunket Society but an application for a donation towards an institution outside the Dominion was refused. The N.G. reminded members that the Juvenile Lodge was holding an>" evening for the presentation of prizes and that members would be welcomed; also that tho lodge would be entertaining tho Loyal Kaia Toa Lodge next lodge night. It was resolved that the secretary should write to the Loyal. Kaia Toa Lodge thanking it for the hospitality extended during the district meeting and to congratulate it on the excellent arrangements as carried out by their officers and members.
