CITY COUNCIL.

LAST NIGHT'S MEETING. The City Council met Inst; evening. There were present: The Mayor (Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.), and Crs. J. S. Barne.tt, E. Parlane, J. K. Archer, A. A. McLachlau, J. Parlane, T. H. Butterfield, G. T. Baker, E. 11. Andrews, J. W. Bcanland, M. E. Lyons, F. T. Eva us, . Williamson, and A. E. Armstrong. The financial statement gave tho following particulars:—General rate levied £126,255 4s 4d; collected £8630 2s <Jd; outstanding £117,595 Js 7d. Receipts since the previous statement amounted to £55,508 4s 8d and accounts amounting to £50,283 7s 7d were passed for payment. Abattoir, Reserves, and Cemeteries. The Abattoir, Reserves, aud Cemeteries Committee reported that the proprietors of the Rangi-lluru School, who leased from the Council a subdivisional reserve situated in Rhodes street and containing I rood 2Si percheH, had written offering to purchase tho reserve for the stun of £l5O. Thcro was a tennis court .situated on tho reserve, of which the public, had the use during limited periods. The reserve had a frontage to Rhodes street, of only 16 links and therefore was of no use as a building site. The Council had power to sell a subdivisional' reserve • subject to the approval of the Governor-General, provided that the proceeds of the sale were applied in the purchase of other land as a reserve or the improvement and development of existing reserves. The Committee was of opinion that the offer of £l5O was reasonable, and, as the reserve at present was of little use for recreation purposes, it. was recommended that the Council take steps to obtain the necessary approval of the sale, the proceeds therefrom to bo utilised for the erection of a pavilion in Elmwood Park. On the motion of Cr. E. Parlane consideration of the clause was held over till next meeting. The Committee reported that during the past few weeks over 30,000 annuals arid bedding plants had been planted in the various reserves and parks in and about the City, There were still about 7000 or SOOO plants at the Nursery, but it was hoped to have them planted out shortly. Owing to the dry condition of the soil many of the beds and borders had to be watered before and again after planting, to give the young plants a reasonable chance of success. The report was adopted. By-Laws and Finance. The By-Laws, Finance, and Departmental Committee reported that the Mairehau Sports Club had asked permission to conduct a sprtrls meeting at English Park on Christmas D.ay. At the meeting of the Council held on December 22nd, 3.030, ft was decided to grant a similar application and the Committee had therefore given permission for the holding of a sports meeting as requested by the Club. Tho report was adopted. Electricity Committee. The Electricity Committee recommended that tho tender of Messrs Tnrnbull and Jones, at £2O 3s Od, for a quantity of underground cable and joint boxes be accepted. It was recommended that the tender of the yickery Electrical Company at £, r >o 9s 3d, He accepted for tlie supply of half a ton of lin weather-proof tape for use in the Overhead Lines Department. The report, was adopted. Town Planning and Housing. The Town Planning, Housing, and Health Committee reported that Mr T. Doig had applied for the Council's approval of the Subdivision of his property situated at the corner of Braddon nrf(] Disraeli streets and containing 1 rood 7.75 perches. He desired to divide the property-into two lots, one containing 27.75 perches and the other containing '2O perches. In 1929, when the minimum area of residential sections was 20 perches, Mr Doig, after making enquiries from the Council, entered into a verbal agreement. with his son for the sale of 20 perches from the property and erected a motor-shed close to the boundary of i the portion which lie proposed retain--1 ing. Since then, however, the by-law had been altered, making the minimum size of residential sections 24 perches. Mr Doig was now desirous of completing the sale, and as when the I negotiations were commenced the proposed subdivision complied with the by-laws, the committee recommended that the necessary resolution be passed approving of the subdivision. The report was adopted. Water Supply and Works. The Water Supply and Works Committee reported that tho Madras street reconstruction ' woiVk had been commenced, it being proposed to lay down three, strips of concrete, each 14ft <3in wide. It was recommended that the tenders of Smart and Sons and T. Smart of 0s Sd per cubic yard be accepted for tlie supply equally of sand and shinglo for the job. It was recommended that the sum of .€222 lis be offered to an employee, Mr Charles Hole, in full settlement of a claim for compensation in respect of .an accident resulting in a severe fracture of an ankle. The committee recommended that the tender of Lilleyman Bros, at £54 16s be accepted for painting tho exterior Avoodwork and roof, papering rooms, and varnishing interior woodwork at the quarry manager's house.
