CHANNEL STORM.
FRENCH STEAMER DISABLED. BRITISH TUG ANSWERS CALL. (BRITISH bWICIAL WIEELESS.) (Received Deccmbor Cth, fi.s p.m.) RUGBY, December 4. Late last night the French " crossChannel steamer Versailles was towed back to Newhaven by '"the Southern Railway tug, Forefront. The Versailles left for Dieppe at midday and had laip ' during the intervening hours in a, semi-helpless condition with her rudder damaged by the violent gale. The Forefront, which set out in response to a call for help, was hit by a terrific sea, which smashed all the cabin windows, and severely injured one. of the crew. When she returned to port with this man the Forefront set out again, and after one rope had snapped and another man had been hurt, managed to bring the Versailles safely, into harbour. A Newhaven lifeboat for some time stood by the Versailles, which drifted into shallow water off Seaford 'Head where she could anchor.. Some of her passengers later were transferred to the night boat Arundel, but the others spent the niglit ashore.
