/ * « —_ MEETING AT MOUNT PLEASANT. A nieeting of residents of Mount Pleasant wan, held at the house o£. Mrs Morton, "Stonycroft," Mount Pleasant, on Saturday evening:, to discuss the proposal recently mads at a conference of local bodies called * by the Christchurch City Council to set aßide a lipecial area in Wools ton for the merit and conducting of heavy industries and offensive trades. The president of the Mount Pleasant Burgesses' Association, Mr H. Edgar, wag in the chair. The following representatives from other districts weris present:—Mr H. Nettleton (ELedcliffs), Mr C. V. Harvey (St. Martina and Huntsbury), Mr C. Flavetl (Henthcota), and Mr J. J. Graham (Woolston). Ap apology was received from Mr D. G. Smith, president of the Sumner Burgesses' Association. s The chairman explained that the purpose of the meeting was to give publicity to the proposal and /to ascertain whether the meeting was in favour of the scheme. Mr A. 6. Williams spoke on the necessity of keeping the estuary and the Heathcote river free from pollution. • Jn his opinion there were no reasons why the lower reaches of the Heathcote should not be beautified Mn the same way as the banks of the Avon. At present the residents of Woolßton and the surrounding districts were safeguarded by the- provisions of the Public Health 'Act, but he considered that the matter'should be well ventilated before such a proposal should; be carried into effect. Mr L. J. Kincaid moved: "That a committee be set up, to consist of _ either_ one or two members of each Association interested, the members to be appointed by their own Associations with power to act, and that in event of any district not having a Burgesses' Association, the committee have 'power to appoint a representative of that district," This was seconded by Mr W. R. Webb and carried. Mr Harvey moved: "That two representatives frqm each Association be appointed, ajid that the Mount Pleasant Association be the convener." The motion Wag carried. The following further .mrttion was moved by Mr Webb. seconded by Mr ,8. H. Thomas, and carried:"That, this meeting of residents of Mount Pleasant, and 1 . representative!? of the surrounding itfistr.ict strongly protests against ally,; attempt to" declare any area _ contiguous totheestuary or the river draining into the estuary as an offensive trades jione. We believe that it would seriously. affect the health, of our district, besides depreciating the value of our properties.
