Bassett, welcomed the guests and said that a* a result of the co-operatiori with the lifeboat Institution they had sow about £BS in hand. The season had been an early one and they would be glad to know that the champion beltman of the dub, Mr L. Buther'and, had been appointed beach patrol (applause). He hoped the people would keep veil inside the bathing area as the club could not undertake supervision about Cave Bock and at Scarborough. Mr W. H. Nicholson, the Mayor, expressed his pleasure at being present. He congratulated the club on the good work of l&st season in the interests of publio safety. He congratulated the beach inspectors on their wcrk and - the club on. its choice of patrolman. They could not have done better in iN'ew Zealand.

Ho was glivd Mr W. H. Benson (president of the Surf Association) was present because ho wanted to assure him that the surf clubs were the natural bodies to have control of the beaches, and the facilities for bathing. He did not think the Association should snd the money for this, but that the public should be given the opportunity of paying for services received at the hands of the suri clubs. The Sumner Borough Council was most anxious to give assistance to the club, and he suggested that the club should ask the publio for financial help if it extended its usefulness in any way. Mr W. H. Benton said that he and' Mr Nicholson were such good friends that it was not necessary to enter into any controversy, which was entirely due to a misunderstanding. The beaches had never been so well safeguarded and he hopd the club Vf'ould enjoy a prosperous season. Mr G. F. Allen, the senior vice-president of the club, expressed his pleasure at being still connected with the club.. He hoped the club would put a strong team in for the New Zealand championships, to be held in January. The following team gave an exhibition of surf work and management 'of the surf catamaran:—K. J.
