TE WHAKA TENNIS CLUB. A doubles tournament held on Saturday afternoon attracted a large number of players. The winners were Miss P. Plimmer and K. Reynolds. A ladies' afternoon tournament was held on Thursday and was won by Miss Lorna Preston. With the object of encouraging young players, Mrs D. Comer is giving a cup for competition during the season. Picnics. The Burnham, Rakaia, and Methven Schools held a combined picnic at Corsair Bay on Saturday, the party numbering 300. The weather was fine, snd an enjoyable day was spent. Lyttelton Swimming Club. The Lyttelton Men's Swimming Club opened the season at Corsair Bay on Saturday afternopn, there being a large attendance of members and visitors. The president, Mr R. H. Mcllroy, declared the season open. Races were held, with results as follows: 33 l-3yds Handicap—L. Coombs (2sec) 1, A. Whitliam (4sec) 2, W. C. Toy (lsec) 3. Won on the touch. Time, 22 4-sscc. 50yds Handicap—O. Farquhar (lsec) 1, A. Torrens (4sec) 2, W. C. Toy (2sec) 3. Eight started. Time, 31sec. Dive—P. Reardon 1, O. Farquhar 2. Schoolboys' Race—A. Torrens (scr) 1, D. Dunlop (lsec) 2, C. Gunson (3sec) 3. Eight started. Won easily. Schoolboys' Dive —D. Dunlop 1, J. Crocker 2. Schoolgirls' Race —Leila Childs 3, Mavis Gilray 2.
