CHESS TOURNEY.

I DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIP. (press association tjx*qjiam\) WELLINGTON, December 5. Fourteen entries were received tor the annual tourney to decide the chess championship of New Zealand, commencing at Napier <>n Boxing Day. They include the present champion, Gyles (Wellington) and five ex-champ-ions in Gunderson (Melbourne), Purely (New South Wales), Erskine (Southland), Grieraon (Auckland) and Kelling (Wellington). Others entered are Severne (Nelson), Scott (Wangahui), %nd Smith (Napier), who are champions of their respective clubs, also Maddox and Miller, ex-champions of the Auckland Club- The entry is the strongest since the Dunedin Exhibition Congress six years ago, and a higher standard of play than usual is looked for.
