NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

TIDES. It will be high tide at midday to-day and 0.31 a.m. to-morrow on the beach, and 12.44 p.m. and 1.25 a.m. in the river. To-morrow, 1.09 p.m.- and 1.39 a.m. on the beach and 1.53 p.m. and 2.23 a.m. in the river. South Brighton. A meeting of the South Brighton Progress League wa& held during the -week, the president (Mr A.' E. Lawry) presiding. Mr Lawry was congratulated ; by members on his appointment as deputy"Mayor of the . borough/» and Mr W. Hulme, a member of tho League, on his election to the Borough Council. The New Brighton Borough Council wrote advising that the League's request for a water supply at Jellicoe street resorve would receive consideration at' the next meeting of the Standing Committee. Further correspondence from the same body intimated that the defective .drainage in Beatty street, between Estuary road and Pleasant Point, would receive temporary improvement. It was decided'to draw the attention of the Borough Council to tho need for foreshore protection at: Pleasant Point. Consideration F. Woodward's "resignation |as joint secretary to tho South Brighton Gala Committee was held over till the next meeting of the committee. BOWlißg. The New Brighton bowling green is a picturesque spot at present, the display of flowers near the pavilion being ono of the best for many years. Tho club is indebted to, Mr 11. Beardsley for his work in this connexion. Mr Beardsloy has spent many hours of his timo in tho cultivation of tho flowers, and is diroctly responsible for the -present display.

New Brighton Boy Scouts. The monthly meeting of the New Brighton Boy Scouts Committee was j held on Tuesday evening. Present were Mesdames S. Napper, J. 11. Coddington, J. Bellamy, and D- M. C. Mcßurney, Messrs B. Bargrove, D. M. C. Mcßurney, G. W. Bishop, J. H. Coddington, E. Turner, H. E. Gott, J. Gott, L. Cliff Stanford, H. L. Beardsley, L. A. Webb, B. E. U.nderhay, W. McDonald- (secretary), and the Scoutmaster, Mr, 0. G. Cooper. Mr E. Bargrovo was elected, ho the chair. The following sub-committees were appointed:—Social: Mesdamea Jumper,. Coddington, Bellamy, und Mcßurney, Messrs Beardsley, Turner, and J. Gott;. finance, Messrs H. E. Gptt, Stanford,, Bishop, Webb, and Coddington. Mrs. S. Napper was appointed to th(| Training Cojnmittee. The main business of the evening was that of -deciding on the site of the boys' annual camp,-and the• committee decided, providing satisfactory arrangements could be made, to hold the camp at Wainui, Banks Peninsula. The j Scoutmaster furnished a most favour- j able report on Wainui, afid as he has . personally inspected the projected sito of the camp, a successful and enjoyable holiday should be assured. .Unemployed. At a recent meeting of the single unemployed men in the borough it was decided, to break away from the present unemployed organisation and form a Separate The chairman, Mr J. L. Scott, explained that tho meeting had been called because'the single men were not satisfied with the working of the present Unemployed Committee. A separate committee was formed, consisting of Messrs J. Scott-(chairman), H. Stevenson (secretary)i and P. Croakc, •vyith power to add. * It was agreed to communicate with, the local Unemployment Relief Commit-': tee asking that a single unemployed; man be appointed to' that body. Four names were submitted to the committee for selection. It Was resolved to ask the .committee of the New Brighton Borough Council for recognition of the single men's committee, and to apply to the North Canterbury Hospital Board in connexion with rations for single men. Amateur Athletics. A meeting of the New Brighton Amateur Athletic Club was held in the Surf Club rooms on Thursday evening, When there were present: Mr A. Hughes •(in the chair),; Miss E; Hay, Messrs W. Queree, R. S. Pearson, H. C. Williams, A. C. Boyd, A. E. Cooke, R. A. Jorgensen, E. "Marriott, and T. Hulmo (secretary)." - v ■ ■ It was decided to hold an evening meeting on the Rawhiti Domain on December 10th, at 6.30 p.m. The events arranged were:—Men's events: 75 yards, 220 yards, one mile, ■ and long jump. Women's events: 50 yards and 100 yards; schoolboys' event: 100 yards. Trophies will be given for tho men's 220 yards and the women's 100 yards. The question of holding a meeting on the beach during Christmas week was left in, the hands of the emergency committee, to be finalised. The events to be run will be men's 100 yards and 220 yards: women's 75 yards and 100 yards; and a mixed relay race. ■ ' . Flower Show. The second annual Flower Show and Sale of Work in connexion vith St.' Faith's Church is to be held in tho Parish Hall next Friday and Saturday. The judges will be:—Flowers, decorative and vegetables, Mr J. Young; cooking, Mr j; T. Norton; school exhibits, Mr C. W Allard.Last year's show produced a splendid display of flowers, arid made it clear tlmt New Brighton, despite its sandy soil, can produce blooms equal to any in Christchurch and suburbs. This year's

display promises to be equally attractive, and given fine weather - should draw a great crowd. 4 Tennis Club. The results of the. NORTH BEACH. Beach Patrols. Three well-known and experienced surf swimmers, all members of the local club, have volunteered to act as beach patrols on tho local beach during the coming holiday season. Tim means that bathers will be assured of protection, while parents will be able to rest assured that their children can play in perfedt safety on the beach within the patrolled area. Although a fair proportion of the necessary money for the purpose is in hand, donations from parents and others will be gratefully accepted by the officials of the North Beach Surf Club. The Waimairi Beach Surf Club propose to hold their official opening next Sunday afternoon. ; Peace Memorial Hall. At a meeting of the executive of the North Beach Gala and Foreshore Improvement Society, an offer was received to rent the Peace Memorial Hall for a term, beginning on December 16th. It was unanimously decided to accept the offer, subject to certain conditions, one being that the tenant allow the church services to bo continued on Sunday evenings. Christmas Fund Concert. The arrangements made for a concert in ooyland on December 10th in aid of Christmas cheer for the families of the unemployed have, owing to unforeseen circumstances, been changed. The effort will now be held in the Premier Picture Theatre, and the attraction will include a big picture and a vocal concert. The Mayor is appealing to residents of tho borough to support the effort.
