ELDERLY MAN KILLED.
ACCIDENT. IN CITY. Mr Henry Sylvanus Gill, of 29 Sbrowsburystreet, Merivale, was killed shortly before noon on Saturday, wlien he was knocked down by a motor-cycle, driven by Allan J. Luston, of. Madras street, at the corner of Cambridge "terrace and Victoria street. It is stated that Mr Gill had stopped off the footpath in order to cross the street when the motor-cycle struck him. Ho was thrown heavily on to the road, and died almost immediately from injuries to his hoad. At an inquest held on Saturday evening, before Mr E. D. Mosley, evi-. donee of identification was given by the dead man's grandson, H. Cumberworthy who said that his grandfather bad had very weak sight. The inquest was. iadjourned sine die. Mr Gill, who was 86 years of age, had been for 65 years in the pastrycook trade, and before his retirement seven years ago had two places of business in Christchurch—one in Colombo street and the other in Manchester street, near the Clock Tower- He was born in Maiden, Essex, in 1845, and came to New Zealand 49 years ago with his wife and family in the 6hir British Queen, settling in Christchurch. Mr Gill was one of the oldest members of the Durham Street : Methodist Church, and had been a member of the church choir for 30 years. He was a trustee of the church. His wife died in 1936, and he is- survived by two daughters—Mrs E. F. Cumberworth, of 29 Shrewsbury street, with whom he had been living, and Mrs W. Harding (Nelson) —and one son—Mr K. T. GiU (Dunedin).
