UNEMPLOYMENT.

POSITION OF WOMEN.

many girls workless

; Replying to a question at yesterday's ■ meeting'.of the executive of tlie Wbmen's Unemployment Committee the secretary (Mrs G. L. Devereux) said that there were very ma:a y young girls out of employment in Christchurch. Some-pf them had had no experience -) whatever, and others had had very little. Many of them were looking for. domestic work because they could not get positions in shops. The great difficulty was to know what to do with the "unemployables." One girl who was registered was not fit to be sent to any position. Since August 15th the following had registered .-—Domestics 63, office 'assistants 2, shop assistants 4, hotel and restaurantlemployees .8, and music teacher 1. There were 17 employed on parttime . work .in the sewing centre, and 11 in the cooking centre. Mr E. T. Bailey said that it had been stated that there had; been a great deal of difficulty in securing domestic servants in spite of the fact that there wore many on the unemployment register. \ The secretary said that the Y.W.C.A. had been asked if it could supply a girl for domestic work. Applicants were asked to call at the house at 8 p.m.,and when they arrived they were told, without an interview, that the position had been filled. It was reported that contributions during the week amounted to £lO 18s lid. The total receipts to date were £441 12s 7d, and payments £243 18s 4d, leaving £197 14s 3d in hand. AT NEW BRIGHTON. MEETING OF '■ UNEMPLOYED. A meeting of unemployed men in Now Brighton was held in the Parish Hall last evening, Mr Michael Cook presiding over an attendance of about sixty. Early in the proceedings, a member moved that the newspaper reporters be asked to leave, the.motion, after discussion, being lost by * large majority. Mr D. G.. Sullivan, M.P., in roply to a letter forwarded by the secretary, wrote stating that the Unemployment Board was considering a schemo for tho relief of single men'. The letter , stated , that the New Brighton Borough Conncil had received a grant of £2OO for: protective stone walling works, and suggested that tho eommittee make application to have tho work carried out by single men. A long discussion ensued as to whether the Borough Council had actually received cash, for the amount of the grant, the opinion being expressed that the money would not be available until the Council had raised a sum equal to the amount of the subsidy. Cross talk ensued regarding the £2OO subsidy to the Council, discussion lapsing when Mr -W. Palmer pointed out that squabbling at the meetings was detrimental to the interests of the unemployed. Beporting upon the deputation which waited upon the Local Unemployment Committee, Mr A. Burgess stated that he had been told that the £2OO subsidy could not be used until the beginning of the next financial-years Mr B. Croake, another membor of the deputation, said that he had asked the. . Unemployment Committee to use more discretion in the matter of whom they 'gave work, as the most deserving eases' had not always received - consideration. In his opinion the local Unemployment Committee had done nothing for the single men. With the exception of the chairman and Mr J. L. Scott, members of tho committee ' supported Mr Croake. Further criticism was levolled at the local Unemployment Committee, it being suggested that the meeting pass a vote of no-confidence in this body. Argument: about the appointment of the Local Unemployment Committee then followed, It being pointed out that if the committee ceased to function in New Brighton the men would have to go to the City for work. Messrs A. Burgess and B. Croake handed the chairman 'their resignations as members of the committee of unemployed. Mr Croake subsequently withdrew his resignation, while that of Mr Burgess was received with regret. DOMINION REGISTRATIONS. ■ (TBBSS ASSOCIATION TgUSO-RAJL) WELLINGTON, September 4.
