A SUCCESSFUL DANCE. Despite the bad weather on Tuesday evening, the dance organised by Mesdames H. C. Watson, C. Smith, and J. Fantham, in aid of the Memorial Hall funds, was a great success. Nearly 300 people danced to music - supplied by Fred Smith and his orchestra. The decorations were carried out with palms and native flora. A lucky spot fox-trot was won by Miss Buckley and Mr Morrell, and a lucky spot one-step by Miss Baldwin and Mr Wright. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss Wylie and Mr Kempton. Messrs Trevor Watson and Alex. Smith were M.C.'s. Amongst the many present were Mesdaines H. C. Watson, 0. Smith, J. Fantham, Moore, Spiers, O. F. Watson, W. Wrightson, L. J. Coull, R. Mrs Haynes presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Mothodist Ladies' Guild on Wednesday afternoon. The function took the form of a "recipe afternoon," when those present exchanged their favourite recipes. It was reported that tho sum of £4l Is 6d had been raised by tho Guild dnring the year in aid of the trust funds. Mrs Haynes congratulated the members on tho pleasing result. Bowling. The committee of the Papanui .Bowling Club met on Wednesday evening, Mr J. L. Freeman presiding. Seven new members were elected. The groen superintendent reported that tho greens were in first-class order. The new grass had made a good strike. The opening of tho season was fixed for October 3rd. It was decided to enter six rinks in tho pennant competition and to install a telephone at the pavilion. Amateur Sports Club. The committee of tho Papanui Amateur Sports Club met on Monday evening, Mr T. A. Grose presiding. Others present were Messrs Of. L. An gas, R. Hill, A. E. Purse, C. Hill, and I'. Powell. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr and Mrs E. .T. Blakeway m the loss of their son. Three new members were elected. The secretary (Mr G. L. Angas) reported that the Pioneer Sports Club were putting on a light car gymkhana at the Show Grounds, prior to the finish of the Round the Gorges raee. This would be the first light car gymkhana held in the South Island. Messrs Grose and R. Hill were appointed to go round the course and arrange for tho various milk stations. The programme for the Gorges raee and the modified marathon was drawn up, and prizes to the value of £l3O were allotted. Sand of Hope. At the monthly meeting of the Band of Hope, held in the Methodist Schoolroom, the Rev. A. Hopper presided over a good attendance. Mr French, Superintendent of the Presbyterian Boys' Home, gave a very interesting illustrated lecture on the Panama Canal. During the evening the following contributed items:—Miss Joyce Wilson, Masters R. Wilson, J. Connew, and R. Webley (recitations), Misses M. Haynes and Billson (songs), Miss Webb (pianoforte solo), and recitations by Misses M. and V. Haynes, K. Hoskins, and M, Peterson. Confirmation Services. On Wednesday evening St. Paul's Church was filled with parents and friends for the annual confirmation services. The Rev. W. H. Orbell took the services, and the Bishop of church conducted the confirmation ceremony. There were 25 young women and 18 young men from St. Paul's parish and 15 young people froa. Belfast. Mothers' Union. The Papanui Mothers' Union met on Wednesday afternoon at St. Paul's Schoolroom, Mrs W. H. Orbell presiding over a good attendance. An interesting address on •"Vocational Training for GirlS"' was given by Mrs Hendie. The lecture was much appreciated, and Mrs Hendie was invited to speak again at a future meeting. Afternoon tea was provided by Mesdames Mann, Wright, and Thomson.
