WELLINGTON, July &> The House of Representatives met at 2.30 p.m. Replying to Mr O. Carr (Lab., Tiroaru) the Hon. S. G. Smith said exemptions from payment of' the unemployment levy under the 1980 Act would hold good also in respect of the Act of this yoar, but in regard to the emergency charge there was no exemption other than in the cases of wages received hy a woman or a girl m private domestic service and wages received on relief works undertaken by a local authority or a public body when the whole amount of such wages yras refunded to the local authority or public body from the _ Unemployment Fund. The only persons exempted from tho emergency charge on incomes were women whose incomes did not amount to £250 per year. Replying to a further point raised by Mr Carr, Mr Smith said only contributors could be considered for employment on relief schemes, but if the Board's finance# improved the question of lifting some of the present restrictions would be considered.

A private Bill, the Wanganui Church Acre Amendment Bill (the Hon. W. A. Veiteh), was road a seconds time.

The following Bills were introduced and a first time: —Stoke Water Supply (the Hon. H. Atmore), Camoron and Soldiers' Memorial Park uMasterton) Trustees Empowering (Mr G. R. Sylces), Wellington City Milk Supply Amendment (Mr R. McKeen).

WELLINGTON, July 39. The Legislative Council met at 2.30 p.m.

The Local Authorities Loans (Rates of Interest) Bill and the Rent Restriction Extension Bill were received from the House of Representatives and read a first time. The Council went into Committee on the Captive Birds Shooting Prohibition Bill.

Objection was raised to the Bill by the Hon. R. McCallum on tho score that it would prevent farmers from destroying sparrows which damaged gram crops. He challenged the operative clause, which. was retained on a division by 22 votes to 4. The Bill was passed without amendment.

The Council rose at 3 p.m. unt3 fcwnorrow.
