JUSTICES' ASSOCIATION. The Canterbury Justices of tlie Peace Association hekl their annual patriotic social last night in tlie Masonic' Hall, Sir Alfred Williams piesiding over a large attendance.. The principal item was a patriotic address given by the liev. IX. Gardner Miller, and thuing the evening songs and elocutionary numbers , were giveu by Miss Nina Partridge, .Mesdames Goode and' 11. CABARET DANCE. The members of the Canterbury Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Association, with tlieir usual acumen and sound judgment, made a very wise choice when they selected the King's Birthday as the date 1 for their cabaret dance. Many holiday-makers, whether they had attended the Trotting Meeting at Addington, made the excursion to Otira, or played football or golf, felt that they would like a pleasant ending to an onjoyablo day, so they attended the cabaret at the Winter Garden,, and were not disappointed in thoir expectations; . There was ati excellent attendance, including many visitors, to the City.. The Bailey-Marston Orchestra provided the dance music and a vegetable ballet, danced by Miss Dorothy White's pupils, with Miss Bonnie Saunders as soloist, was a most' entertaining item.

OBITUARY.

DOWAGER COUNTESS OF GLASGOW. GRANDMOTHER OF THE LADY ALICE FERGUSSON. The death is announced in the "Weekly. Scotsman" of Montague, Dowager Countess of Glasgow, widow of the sixth Earl of Glasgow, and mother of Lady Cochrane of Cults. Lady Glasgow, who had reached her 96th year, was the daughter of the 3rd Lord Abercroinby and sister of the--stli and last Lord Abercromby. The Dowager Countess was a charming personality,with a kindly nature which endeared her to ail. She had Jived with her daughter, Lady Cochrane at Crawford Priory for • many years. She was at Crawford Priory* in December last, veaf,''When Lord and Lady Cochrane celebrated their golden wedding/ * ' < _ The Dowager, who maintained remarkably good! health, did all her- own writing until' three'.' months' prior • to her death. ' The Dowugur Countess was mother of. tlie late; Earl 1 of Glasgow, Governor, of Now Zealand "from' June 7th, 1892, until 1897, and; grandmother of the present Earl of Gldsgow,, and of the' Lady Alice Ferguesori,. who is grate-; fully and affectionately remembered in; New Zealand as wife of General Sir Charles Fergus&on, Governor-General' of New Zealand! from<l934; to 1930.
