TUEF GOSSIP. Reminders, Acceptances for the Egmont Winter Meeting will close to-day. Acceptances for the Marlborough Autumn Meeting will be due on Monday. Combined Permit Refused. The Minister for Internal Affairs has notified the Westland Eacing Club that' he will not sanction a permit for the proposed combined Meeting with the Ashburton County Eacing Club for May 23rd, but indicated that ho would grant a permit for i;lie Westland Club alone to race on a day to be approved of by the Racing Conference. The club has accordingly decided to make application for May 30th, provided the necessary permission is given by the Eiccarton racecourse trustees. The Ashburton Club will now have to decide whethor they will revert to their original date; May 23rd, on their own course. Rlccarton Training Notes. Some interesting work was done at Eiccarton yesterday by horses engaged to race at to-tnorrow's Meeting. The No. 7 grass track was open, but the plough waa more in use, both providing fast going. Night Eecital opened proceedings by reeling off five furlongs on the grass in lmin 2 l-saoc. Straight Course executed a useful mile gallop on the plough with Ball Dress, taking lmin 45sec, the first five furlongs in lmin 4 3-ssec. Semper Paratus and Taragona were together throughout a seven furlong task on the plough executed in lmin 30 2-Ssee. Battle Queen was going better than Ma Belle Polly at the end of five furlongs on the grass run in lmin 5 2-ssec, but both could have done better if desired.. Limited covered five furlongs on the plough in lmin 4sec, and Sharp Thorn beat Bon rose in similar work in lmin ssec, while Pitie Gold followed in lmin 4 3-isscc. Winsome Bind showed her usual speed by reeling off a liko journey in lmin 3scc. Whatnot and Weatherly, joined by Belvoir at three furlongs, rap five furlongs on the grass in lmin 4sec. There was little between True Shaft and Kauelagh.at the end of five furlongs oil tho plough, run in lmin Ssec. The former, although galloping well of late, has not been quite himself during the past few days* and may nOt be a starter to-morrow. Metal Bird beat Rose Of Orange over half a mile on the grass in 51sec. Idolize, with a good weight up, and from a standing start, was not asked to do her best in recording 50 4-sscc for a similar task. Jaloux galloped six furlongs comfortably on tne plough in lmin 18 4-ssec, and Azalea sprinted home three furlongs with him. Boyal Love, under a feather impost, registered the best work of the morning on the plough by leaving six furlongs behind in lmin 16 2-ssec. Arrowstick was, of no use to Wise Choice over five iurlongs on the grass in lmin Ssec. Compria.attracted attention by galloping si* furlongs on the grass in lmin ICsec, Invietus accompanying him for five furlongs and. finishing practically on terms. Rascal easily accounted for Starshooter at the end of six furlongs on the 'plough in lmin 18 l-saec. The TfoWff and The Viscount occupied lmin 19 8-ssee over the same distance. Zeebrugge ran five furlongs on the plough in lmin 3 l-ssec, Good £atek Joining him in the run home. Night Flyer had too much pace for Spinster over five furlongs on the grass, taking lmin ssec. King Musket held Gasrange safe throughout six furlongs on the grass, clocked in lmin 16sec. King Musket is a long time fulfilling .expectations, but bow seems to be coming right. Morfinch Felluce and Lochard finished abreast after covering five furlongs on the grass in lmin 3sec. Elude and Countermarch strode over six furlongs comfortably on the plough in lmin 19sec. ✓ A Siding Record. A New Zealand record was established by H. Gray, when he won on Orby's Choice at Stratf«rd lagt week. This made his ninetieth winner for the season, the previous best being eighty-nine ridden by C. Jenkins, aAd eighty-eight by B. Deeley. Substantial Prize. The Arlington Classic will be the richest three-year-old race in the world this season. It will be run at Arlington Park (Chicago) in July, and the added money is £14,000. It is expected that forfeits and sweepstakes will increase the value to £IB,OOO, and, if 80, the winner's share will be about £16,000. Donoghue's Mount. S. Donoghuo's mount in this year's English Derby will be Heritage {Legatee—Earlford), who is still a maiden, but was placed in five of the seven races in which he ran last year. Mr T. F. Dawkins, the Jockey Club handicapper, gave Heritage Bst when weighting the two-year-olds for the Free Handicap Sweepstakes at the close of last season, Jacopo and Portlaw, with 9-7 each, being on top. Donoghue's first placing in a Derby was third on Charles O'Malley, in 1910, and was similarly placed .on Boyal Tender and Paper Money. He won on Pommern, Gay Croaader, Humorist, Captain Cuttle, Fspyraa, -mi. Manna.

G. Price's Team. A dozen horses owned by Mr "F. Smitliden" recently arrived at Eandwick from Melbourne to be trained by G. Price at Eandwick. Another nine are coming, and H. Telford will still have a few of those in Mr "Smithden's" ownership, Prico has decided to spell six of the recent arrivals and those lie will keep in training are Hadagain, Duplex, Merry England, Flying Dave, Jleasonablo, and a Legionnaire filly. He is also tc> train the two Brazen yoarlings bought by Mr "Smithden" at the recent gales at Eandwick. Straight-out Totalisator. City Tattersalla' Meeting at Eandwick on April 18th afforded further proof of the popularity of the straightout totalisator. On the corresponding day last year, when there were seven races, totalisator officials handled £ 19,257 10s. At tho recent meeting, when six races came up for decision, there was a substantial increase, the returns in three reserves totalling £88,586 ss. Officials of the A.J.C. must feel pleased with the results of the Win Totalisator. In these times of depression, when the falling-off in totalisator returns is viewed with much pessimism, the now mode of betting has given the sport a fillip. The new method of speculation compares favourably with betting ring quotations, and its marked success may now induce other metropolitan clubs to introduce straight-out totalisator wagering. Kentucky Dorby. Entries for the Kentucky Derby, to be run on May 16th of this year, closed on February 4th, and, attracted 130 nominations. The idea is probably better than tho one customary in Australia of closing Derby entries sixteen or seventeen months before these races are run (says a Sydney paper). An alteration in the direction indicated would save owners, trainers, and club officials quite a lot of worry. The added money for the Kentucky Derby is again £IO,OOO, of which £I2OO goes to second, £6OO to third, and £2OO to fourth. The first payment is £5, and the next is an additional £IOO for starters. Eighty-four different stables are represented in this year's entries, and no owner has nominated more than five horsos. A Costly Purchase. Satrap was a great disappointment in the Second Hurdle Eace on the third day of the Eandwick Meeting (says the "Sydney Beforee"). On the opening day, when ridden behind the main body for a long way in the First Hurdle Race, he was narrowly beaten. Well placed from the commencement this time, he appeared to be going easily in third place' about five furlongs from home, but tired, and pulled up lame. Now six years old, Satrap has not won a race since he beat In the Shade, Damaris, and Laughing Prince in the Great Northern St. Leger at Ellerelie (Auckland). Earlier in the season he Won the N.Z. St. Leger at Wellington. After his Auckland Win he ran Star Stranger to three-quarters of a length. Then he came to Australia, and his deterioration here has been remarkable and unaccountable. On Stable Tips. The well-known American racing man, W. 8. Voat>urgh, hfts no illusions concerning the breeding or buying of racehorses, and the following remarks made by hint in the L&rfngton "Thoroughbred Record" apply to most countries as well as America: —"From an experience of a lifetime it often occurs to me that in matters concerning the breeding, selection and racing of horses, for which men are often given the credit of knowing a great deai, there are no subjects of which they know so little. The mistakes of horsemen, whether owners, trainers or breeders, will, fill volumes. It is fair to suppose that a trainer constantly associated With horses is in a better position to speak of tho chances of a horse for a race than anybody. Yet, it is frequently remarked that 'a trainer's tips would break a bank.' . . . That men should make mistakes is not so strange after all. Eacing and the breeding of racehorses are too involved —too complex. Owners and trainers become 'stable blind' as regards their own horses, and blind to the excellence of other men's horses. Breeders allow them* selves to become the worst kind of theorists. In the purchase of yearlings men are given the credit of 'good judgment,' when good luck would seem more deserving." TROTTING NOTES. Reminders. Acceptances for Forbury Park close to : night at 8 o'clock. Acceptances for the two trotting events at the Marlborough Eacing Club's Meeting will close, on Monday, while the Te Aroha and Marlborough Trotting Clubs' acceptances close on the same day. . " Payment Due. Owners and trainers are reminded that a payment of 2 sovs is due to-day at 12 noon for the New Zealand Metropolitan Club's Derby, to be decided in November next. > Recommissioned. Logan Park and Desert Bey, two members of W. J. Tomltinson's team, who have been spelling for some time, have just been brought into work again. Both appear in good condition to start upon a preparation. Homeward, a member of the same stable, is to enjoy a letup. At Addington. v Headlight and Tempo, who are acceptors for Saturday's Meeting at Eiccarton, were not asked to do much at Addington yesterday, but got through some useful work. The Travis Axworthy filly in. F. G. Holmes' stable again pleased in the way that she completed the task asked of her. In Fine Order. Erin's Fortune paced nicely over a | couple of miles at three-quarter pace, l appearing to relish the work. Vesuvius and Somerby were companions throughout their work, which was done at a handy speed. Somerby looks ready to do his best at an early date. Beady for More. A fine exhibition of free-legged pac-1 ing was given by The Abbey and Captain Wrack. These two did not make a mistako throughout their two mile j journey, and although the time registered was quite fair they both could have done better. Improvement Expected. . Great Nelson was restricted to slow jogging. He has quietened down a lot lately and an improvement in his form can be expected when he is next raced. • Others who did useful work were Kelp, Linkman, Dillon, Gold Country, Ola Pointer, Willie Derby, and Actor.

Welcome Guy. J. J. Kennerley has made another start on Welcome Guy* He looks as if be has not been idle since he was given a rest from the tracks, and it will not be long before this promising young trotter will be fit to race again. Ratloc, under the same mentor's care, has. shown signs of soreness lately, and is to be treated to a spell. Baynut. Baynut has had another change of quarters. He is now numbered in the team presided over by F. C. McDermott. He is progressing satisfactorily at Aldington. Of Mew Zealand Interest. The Australian "Trotting Record" has the following to stiy of Lou Spear, the winner of the trotters' division of the Harold Park Derby recently run in Sydney:—There is not a better bred trotting filly in America than Lou Spear, she being by Wilbur Lou (imp.) from Joan Spear, who is by Nelson Bingen (imp.) from Miss Spear (imp.) by Peter the Great from Widow Lola, who is out of tho celebrated American producing mare The Widow. Widow Lola, Joan Spear's grand-dam, is by Onward from Tho Widow, and thus full-sister to Maggie Onward, dam of Widow Maggie, one of whose Bons is Mr McElwyn, lmin 59Jsec. As a three-year-old Mr McElwyn trotted a mile in lmin 50|sec, and being retired to the stud as a four-year-old is now one of the most famous sires in America, among his sons being Main McElwyn, who last season proved the greatest two-year-old trotter in America with 2min 2|sec.
