ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. Tho Council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society met last evening, when the president, Mr C. H. Lawrence, was in the chair. There was a large attendance. The deer committee reported that advice had been received from tho Department of internal Affairs that the recommendation of the Society for an open season from March - Ist to April 30th had been granted on the understanding that all revenue derived must be used in the destruction of deer. It had been resolved that an assistant culler be appointed for three months. The appointment should be j made as soon as possible so that the two cullers would be available early in November. Hinds could then be destroyed while still in calf. Tho Garden Committee reported that in response to an application from Mr S. M. Deans, 2000 rainbow fry had been sent to him for liberation in the Blythe river. . The Finance Committee recommended that a special deer account be opened, to be credited with £6OO as on October 31st, 1930. Concerning the transferring of fornian quail from Nelson p- Marlborough to the Society's district, the Department of Internal Affairs_ wrote that after conferring with the Department of Agriculture, no departure could be made from the decision already given —that the birds could not be transferred. ' The Department of Internal Affairs also wrote that as the ban placed on the importation of birds in ft arc i last was for a period of 12 months, the Department could not allow the society to import chukor from India. , It was decided that a donation of five guineas should bo made to the trustees of Deans Bush. The Society's curator, Mr D Hope, reported that during the month 184,500 fry had been released. _ The swan egg committee reported that 200 cases of eggs had been collected during the month. Accounts totalling £.283 0s 3d were passed for payment.
