ELEPHANT INJURES KEEPER.
[THE PRESS Special Senrtce.] AUCKLAND, November 19. A keoper at Auckland Zoological Park, Herbert Hunter, received injuries to the iiead through being knocked down by the new male elephant recently purchased from the Hobart Zoo. The animal, which seems to have missed the company of the keeper who brought him over from Tasmania, apparently resented the intrusion of a new face in his den. He pushed Hunter violently with his trunk, and in falling the keeper j struck his head against the iron edge of the flooring, inflicting a scalp wound that necessitated his removal to hospital and the insertion of five stitches. Hunter was feeding the elephant when he was struck. Instead of throwing food to him he entered the animal's apartment and started to hand-feed and pet him, as it is b.v fondling an elephant at feeding time that a keeper becomes on friendly terms with his charge.
