THE SQUARE.
PROPOSED new shelters. FOUR STRUCTURES CONTEMPLATED. Following upon his announcement at the Returned Soldiers' Association's smoking concert last Friday night regarding the provision of shelters in Cathedral square for waiting tramway passengers, the Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) has lost no time in getting matters m train and in getting preliminary plans pcepared by the City Engineer, Mr A. R- Galbraith. A committer appointed by the IVlayor, consisting of himself and Councillors D. G. Sullivan, M.P., E. H. Andrews, and J. W. Beanlnnd. has been discussing the matter with the view of bringing down a recommendation for consideration by the City Council, probably at its meeting on Monday night. It is understood that the Mayor is anxious to get the work put in hand with as little delay as possible. Ee-laying of Train Tracks. Some delay will be unavoidable because it is proposed by the Tramway i Board to remove the existing double track in front of the present tramway shelter to a position near the front of the Cathedral In some quarters it is considered not at all' improbable that a renewed attempt may be made to give effect to the scheme proposed by the General Manager of the Tramways (Mr Frank Thompson) there would l>e only one tramway track through Cathedral square and southbound cars would travel by a new route via Armagh street and Manchester street. The details of this scheme appeared in Tub Press of July 21st, 1928. Tour Shelters Being Considered. The committee is, howevei, proceedinc on the assumption that the double tramwnv track will be continued through the Square. The committee considered tlu* erection of two long shelters immediately in front of tho entrance to the Cathedral, one on the eastern side of the tramway tracks and the other on the western side. .This proposal has been modified by dividing each shelter into two, leavine the view ot the entrance to the Cathedral unobstructed. Thus, on the eastern side of the double tramway tracks, it is proposed that there shall be one shelter to the south of the entrance and one to the north; th >re will be corresponding shelters on the western side of the twnwav tracks, facing those on the eastern side. The present .safety zone is to he removed. The proposed structures will be comparetivel.y narrow, providing room for one long seat. The roof will overhang, but will provide sufficient clearance for the cars, and the portion facing the ira/n----wav tracks will be open. The design ot "the shelters is to be ornamental in character It is not proposed that the cost of the structures snould be borne bv the City Council: the Tramway Board will he "expected to foot the bill.
