TRENTHAM NOTES.

i PREPARING FOR LEVIN. I THE PBESB SjMSciaJ Service.) WELLINGTON, November 18. The weather for training operations at Trentham this morning was cold and overcast, with a threat of rain. All the fast work was done on the No. 1 grass, and after a quiet spell, owing to the New Zealand Cup Meeting, proeeodings brightened up again. Open Cheque gave Taura Lad a start, and a four lengths' beating over four furlongs in SOsec. Open Cheque should win races on the way he gallops on t le tracks. He will be ridden by K. \ oitre at Levin on Saturday. Hunting Call was better than Mythology over five furlongs in lniin 3 4-ssec, the iaßfc half mile in 50 4-sscc. Hunting Call waa doing it well all the w-ay, and the time was good. Malayan and Tea Queen ran six furlongs in the. smart timo of lmin 10 l-saee, the fast half mile in 51sec. Malayan looks in first-class shape. He will be ridden at Levin by S. Wilson. Tea Queen may not fulfil her engagement. Salt Pot and Joie de Val took lmin 18 l-ssec for six furlongs, but tlioy were not doing their best by any means until the last two furlongs, up to which stage they had just loped along. Joi do "Val will be ridden in the maiden race at Levin by H. Gray. Concentrate Sore. Concentrate, who was unable to start in the Metropolitan Handicap at liiccarton on Saturday owing to slight soreness and the risk attached to a hard track, was on the tan doing pace work with Gesture. Except for moving a trillo scratchily he looks well, and Gesture has come to no harm by her races in tho Stewards' Handicap and Oaks Stakes.

■ Gold Sand sprinted without being timed, and Acis and Prefect, sent to do three-quarter pace work, ran five furlongs in lmin 6Asec, the last half mils in 52, with Acisbattling for his head. Limosin was out doing pace work on the tan. Ho looks in excellent order, but so far it is not definite whether ho will start at Levin, though he will attend the Meeting with Auckland Gas and Dignified March. The two lastnamed look well and had sprinted satisfactorily yesterday morning. No riders have as yet been engaged for them at Levin. Jiothen and Valrewa ran live furlongs in lmin osec. Valrcwa appeared to be doing it better. She has been leased by lior trainer, J. McLaughlin, and will carry his colours at Levin. first Money put great dash into paee work on the tan. The disappointing Paper Money golding goes well enough on the tracks to win any sprint race in tl-e country. H. Gray will ride him at Levin, where the turning track should suit him. General Assembly and the Roger de Busli two-year-okl, Sir Roger, sprinted tliren furlongs in 37sec. The youngster is a good-looking colt and moves well. White Doe and Lady Rene ran four furlongs in olsec, both going Gerrand will ride White Doe at Levin. Oral and Oratorian sprinted twice down the straight, and Zephyrus worked over six, i furlongs. Crash and Peep began at the six furlongs, and after Peep had pulled off in the straight Crash finished in lmin lDJsec. Kiriana pleased better than Half Acre at the end of seven furlongs in lmin 31i«ec. Half Acre, who is variously described in race-books as a mare and a colt, is a gelding. Black Mint began slowly against Rameses and Dainty Ways at the mile ' post, but was only a length behind Dainty Ways at the finish in lmin 46 2-ssec. Rameses was pulled off in the straight. The last half-mile took 53 l-ssec, and the effort of Ways was a good one. She is in the principal race at Levin on Saturday. Acorn, a. good-looking two-year-old sister to Don Quixote (Paladin —Hornbeam), was exercised on the two-year-old track by J. MeLaughlin, 8. Eeid doing similar work with Forestry, a colt by Limond from Forest Girl. A. D. Webster Returns. A. D. Webster, accompanied by Mrs Webster and son, the well-known jockey, T. Webster, arrived from Sydney by the Marama to-day. He brought back First Acre, Movio Star, Hunt the Slipper, and I'm Alone. Webster had i probably the most successful trip finan- ! cially of all the New Zealanders who tried their luck on the other side this spring. First Acre won in Sydney and Melbourne, while Movie Star, as reported at the 4ime, landed a big coup for his connexions when he scored in the A.J.C. Breeders' Plate. Hunt the Slipper was also a winner at the Melbourne Cup Meeting, where First Acre established an Australian and Now Zealand record for a mile and three-quar-ters. Webster maintains that First Acre should have been second in the Melbourne Cup or at leaßt placod. Ho held a good position in the running until T. Webster was hit in the eye by a flying clod. It was a very painful injury and prevented him from doing his mount justice afterwards. Good odds for a place were obtained about him in the big two-mile event. T. Webster made the return trip from Mel-

bourne to Sydney by aeroplane, and Is not anxious to rapeat the ride. .All, including the horses, landed back in the best of health. Webster will he at the Levin Meeting on Saturday. According to present plans he will return to Sydney with hid team in the autumn. Tho horses left for Otaki by motor float after landing. Mr C. Boyle's Team. Mr C. Boyle dropß a line from Bandwick to say that Rational and Raaouli have improved since arrival there from Melbourne, but Rasouli does not look so well as he did when he left here. They were to race at Menangle to-day, and will probably contest ovents at Warwick Farm and Moorefield beforo re-

turning at tho end of the month. Mr I Boyle agrees with A. D. Webster that First Acre with luck would have been , placed in the Melbourne Cup. He I thinks that Phar Lap is good enough to J win again next year. j AUCKLAND T.C.
