NORTH CANTERBURY.

I (\ * ♦ I RANGIORA. Messrs W. A. Roivse (chairman), A. H. Palairet, 15. D. 11. Smith, (J. J. Smith, C. W. Tyler, and W. C. Prosser, members of the Dudley Park Jubilee Memorial Gates Committee, met on Monday evening. Air J. M. Fraser, secretary, reported that the engineers had certified that the gates were now completed and satisfactory. The treasurer was authorised to pay the contractor, Mr Tweedie, the final payment of £7O. It was decided to hand the gates over to the borough on Saturday, November 29th, and that. Mrs Rowse be invited to open the gates at 2 p.m. An honorarium was voted to the secretary in recognition of his services during the jubilee. At the A. an<] P. The Kaiap.M Male Choir made its annual visits to the Christchurch Hospital and the Rannerdalo Home, Papanui road, and a concert was given at each institution. KAIKOURA. Mr James Boyd, accompanied by Mr James Fulton, of the Alarlborough Land Board, left for Coverham on Monday, by way of Kekerangu, to inspect and report on Coverham and Upton Fells estates, which are under offer to the Government for closer settlement purposes. The trip will occupy about ten days. The survey partv is now taking a line about a quarter of a mile from the towuship, through the Farmers' Co-operative Association's yards, and thence on to Ludstone. From this point the railway line could run through Mr F. J. Monk's property antl along by The Elms estate. An inspection of school garden plots has been made by Messrs J. A. Johnston and A W. Barker, of the Town School Committee. Hot weather is now being experienced, and shearing operations are in full swing. It has been found that there has not been the usual growth of wool. This is owing to the cold and backward season. Some farmers who held back their ewes last year have found that mortality has been excessive owing to shortage of feed, and the lamb averages are below the usual standard. BAL CAIRN. A social was held in the Balcairn Public Hall for the purpose of raising money for work in connexion with the hall. There was a good attendance, and a very enjoyable time was spent. Competitions were won by Mrs J. Fitzpatrick, Mrs W. Arthur, and Miss P. Dron, Messrs G. Hale, NY. Jamieson, and G. Smith. Music for the dance was supplied by Misses E. Carroll, A. Fitzpatrick-, and D. Hurley. Mr B. Fitzpatrick was M.C. The deputation, consisting of Messrs H. Hurley, J. Fitzpatrick, and N. Kelcher, whicn was appointed by the residents to interview the Education Board to endeavour to secure the old school grounds for recreation purposes, have reported that they, were successful. The grounds will be used in future for recreation. A strong committee has been elected to carry out details. LEITHFIELD. The fortnightly meeting of the Loyj-.l Leithneld Lodge was held, Bro. T. Fleming presiding over a good attendance. Sick pay amounting to £3 18s •Id was passed for payment. The secretary reported that final arrangements had been, made for a combine**, church parade, to be held in the Oddfellows' Hall on November 23rd. One new member was initiated. The N.G. extended a bearty welcome to Bro. Harry Eaton, of Taihapo. VIEW HILL.

The opening of the tennis season was held at View Hill, under adverse weather conditions. Mr Macdonald apologised for the absence of the pro- 1 sident, and declared the courts open. In the evening a well-attended and much-enjoyed social was held in the school in aid of the Tennis Club's funds. SPRINGSTQN SOUTH. The Hall Committee's weekly 6ociai at Springston South was held, when competitions were won by Miss Newton and Mrs G. W. Tyson, Mr G. Duff and Mr J. Bennett. An aggregate prize for most points for six nights was won by Mrs I\. Tyson and Mr J. Bennett. Miss Dorothy Duff played for the dance. Mrs A. Roßcoe (Papanui) and Mr P. Olliver (Redcliffs) have been spending a short holiday with their sister, Mrs K. J. Harris. Mr and Mrs Aschen (Ashburton) have returned home after a short stay with Mrs Musson. Mr and Mrs C. G. Judson spent ia few days with Mr and Mrs T. J. Kimber. Mrs J. Catherall (Masterton) is visiting hew sister, Mrs J. Woods. DOYLESTON. At a general meeting of the Dovleston Athletic Club on Monday evening, Messrs J R. Godsell, W. Maw, and G. W. Cooke were appointed judges for the district road race, to be held on Saturday evening. The programme of the Boxing Day sports, with several alterations from last vear, was approved. The one-mile Canterbury Cycling Championship and the Highland Fling Provincial Championship will appear as before, but the 100 yards' Canterbury Running Championship has been eliminated. In place of the 220 yards handicap, a Doyleston Sheffield race of 135 yards has been added. Other additions are a one and a half miles' district cycle race and a novelty cycle race. The tug-of-war events have been expunged. The following stewards were appointed for the post-entry events: Tossing of caber. Mr W. Maw; pillow fight, Mr W. Maw; sheep weight judging, Mr W Fnssell; stepping competition. Mr J. Bowis : piping and dancing, Misses M. Brizzle and M. Cooke. A working bee on the racing track was arranged for next Saturday. SPRINGSTON. The Irwell and Springston cricket teams met on Saturday at Irwell. the visitors winning by 112 runs. Scores: Snrinsston 21*3 for etght (declared). (F. "Ridden 27. H. Grimwood 100, W. Leslie 15. C. Reid 12. M Templeton. not out. 46). Irwell. 102 OV. Donk 52, B. Co® 19. S. McLaughlip 11). For Irwell W. Doak took four wickets for 69, and P. Chamberlain three for 114.
