Arrangements have been made to send a team comprising six ladies and six men to Rangiora on November 29t.h. A letter has been sent to the Mount Pleasant Club inviting them to arrange . a date for a return match to be played on the Sumner courts. Seldom in the history of the club has so much interest been shown in the matches played in connexion with the ranking list—a bappy augury for the welfare of the club. Members will appreciate the extra protection afforded by the wire netting which was recently placed along the creek boundary. The nuisance of retrieving balls fro* the water will be considerably minimised. ■ The Proposed Gala. The Sumner Civic Federation has taken the first step towards the revival of the old ; tiine beach carnival by deciding to approach the Borough Council to obtain the necessary permission to do so. Last year, mainly owing to the lack of a suitable area of ground, the proposal fell through, but now Nature has provided a space eminently suited to such a project. The beach formed between the Cave Rock and the Clifton tram bridge could not be improved upon as a site; it is spacious; it is so far removed from the residential area as to minimise any possible _ annoyance to property-owners, and it is adjacent to a stretch of water where aquatic events could very easily be staged. If the necessary permission is obtained and the support of various local bodies is secured, the short period available would necessitate hard work on the part of a controlling committee. Sumner Band. It is to be hoped that residents will show their interest in the proposal to reform the Sumner Marine Band by attending the meeting to be held shortly by the Sumner Civic Federation to discuss ways and means of raising the balance of the money owing. Many residents may not be aware of the circumstances attending the purchase of the instruments in 1923. The purchase price was £.350, of which £.205 has been raised by collections and subscriptions, leaving a balance of £.145 still owing. The firm from whom the instrur menta were purchased lias adopted a very generous attitude, no . interest haying been charged on it. Now, however, unless the required sum is forthcoming very shortly, the instruments wip be seized, £205 of the residents' money lost, and the fate of the band definitely sealed. The failure of the band to pull together in the past has been caused by lack of proper management. In the event of the band again being started, the Civic Federation intends that the band's organisation shall be on sound business line*. A Distinguished Visitor. » Residents will perhaps be surprised to learn that an unofficial visit was paid to the borough by the GovernorGeneral Lord Bledisloe on Sunday last, who, accompanied by his aide-de-camp, walked along the beach and appeared specially interested in'the extent of the damage caused by the high tides. Plunket Society. Mrs Morten presided over the monthly meeting of the Sumner-Redcliffs branch of the Plunket Society at tho residence of Mrs W. J. Sim, Clifton. There were also present Mesdames Walter, Claydon, Morton, Shrimpton, Forrest, Murphy, and Collins, and Miss Overton. ' The resignation of Mrs Cornes was received with regret. Remits for the Plunket Conference, to be held in Wellington this month, were read, and discussion took place over the question of sending a delegate to the conference. None of the members, however, could find it convenient to go this year. It was decided to hold a stall for home-made cakes on Saturday, November 29th. . . .. The Nurse's report for October was as follows: —Sumner -was visited six times and twenty-three homes were visited. Redcliffs was visited five times and six homes were visited.
