ashburton. EXCURSION TO CHRISTCHURCH. There was - an exodus of Ashburton people to Christchurch yesterday, to visit the Metropolitan Show and trots. On Thursday evening 93 boarded the north express, 328 joined the early morning train yesterday, while. a further contingent of 120 followed on the special from Timaru. The town observed a whole hbliday, and a number who did not go to the City held private picnics at various resorts in the vicinity of Ashburton. The tennis, bowling, andcroquet greens on the Domain were well patronised. Sunday School Picnics. Yesterday a large number of. Baptist Sunday School scholars journeyed to the "farm of Messrs Cochrane Bros., Elgin, where their annual picnic was held. .A number of parents also made the. trip. A programme of sports was Conducted under the supervision of the Sunday School Superintendent (Mr A. W. Hopkins) and staff. Scholars of the Baring Square Mcthjodist Sunday School, with their parents, assembled in full force for their an.nua2, picnic at the Tinwald Domain, yesterday.' All the arrangements, which incliiaed a comprehensive programme of sports", were supervised by Mr T. WakeJin, Superintendent, assisted by the staff; 1.0. G.T. Lodge. ■At the 1 fortnightly meeting of the Star of- : the East 1.0. G.T. No. 62, Bro. H. Bands, C.T., presided. Three candi- ■ dates, were initiated into the Order, and two proposals for membership were received. The installation of officers was carried out by the lodge deputy, Bro. G. W. A progressive tournament • was held bu the Ashburton Croquet Club's green yesterday, resulting in a win for Mrs C. J. Cowan, with Mrs C. J. McEachen, nmncr-up. Sixteen, players participated in the competition. MT. SOMERS. Those present at the monthly meeting of the Mt. Somers Boad Board were Mr J. B. Lockhard (chairman), Colonel R. B. Neill, Messrs G. A. Bland, E. J. ;Waugh, and A. B. Lochhead. The Board .'expressed sympathy with the Turton and Goodrich families, in their bereavements. The works report showed how ; the -Board's, teams had been- employed - during the month. It was resolved to call tenders for the shingling of the Gorge road between Barrosa Woolsheds and Blackyards, near Mt. Possession. Tho clerk reported that the Tramway Reserve road contract had been passed by the Public "Works Department.' 1 The following transfers were authorised: A. E. Smith to - D. H.' Clifton; Crown to J. Gorrie; T. Mills to W. C. Bishop; T. Harris to Blackburn Coal Company; T. *£ Hhtt to F. J. Smith. At a special meeting of the vestry in connexion with- the Anglican Church, Mt. Somers, there were present: Bev. H. M. Cocks (in the chair), Messrs E. C. Wood, A. N. Grigg, J. H. Boaler, L. B. Harrison, G. Frost, J. Mclvor, and J. T. Bull. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs L. M. Goodrich, in her bereavement. The Ashburton Power Board advised that the increased power rate would not apply to churches. It was reported that the procoeds from the hare and stock drives amounted to over £4O, As funds were insufficient to allow of any further stipend allowances, or to meet liabilities, beyond the present month, and as any further special appeals to parishioners during the existing financial depression were considered., unwise, it was considered better to take steps to 'close the .parish rather than incur liabilities by borrowing money, and in the meantime, it . was decided to ask for an immediate conference with the Standing Committee to discuss matters.
