UNEMPLOYMENT ACT. . <*» Registrations under the Unemployment Act in Tima-ru totalled 4998 up till' November 11th, and 214 have regis- j tcred «ince then, a total of 5212. In the Timaru postal district, which extends from Rangitata to Glenayy, 10,909 men had registered up to November llth. The Timaru postal authorities have received the"' booklets containing receipt forms for the payment of the levies, and these are being distributed to the - taxpayers who have registered. The supply came to hand on Thursday afternoon, and yesterday 143 were distributed. Automobile Association. At the monthly meeting of the Soulji Canterbury Automobile Association Mr j J. Palliser presided. Mr A. H. Robinson, of St. Albans, Christchurch, wrote stating that he and four other motor-cyclists had "been charged for camping at the Timaru A. and P. Association's Show Grounds. He said that at other camping grounds they had" never been charged for more than one car. The secretary stated that tho charges were posted on the gate. Mr J. M. Jenkins said that it was not a matter for the Automobile Association, as they got nothing out of it, but for the A. and P. Association. He moved that the chairman interview the latter body regarding the 'matter. The motion was carried. Messrs Tripp and Rolleston notified the Association that the Timaru Borough Council had the right to. reserve spaces in the main thoroughfare as parking places It followed, therefore, that motorists who-parked on :one of these parking places and refusied to move their cars when ordered to do so by the traffic inspector, or by the police, would commit a breach, of the law. The chairman said a breach was not committed by a motorist unless he refused to move when so instructed. In connexion with the proposal to establish a camping ground in t.he Temuka Domain, it was decided to give £lO to tho Temuka Progress League for this year, this being subject to the conditions laid "down by the Association being complied with. It was reported that 46 new members had been enrolled during the month, .making, a total membership of 906. Timaru Boxing Association. At a meeting of the Timaru Boxing Association the secretary was directed to convey the members' thanks to Mr A. S. Elworthy for a generons donation to the Association. A letter was received from the Temuka Boxing Club asking the Association to. stage a tournament at Temuka on ■November- 27th'. The chairman' (Mr J. Bohm) said that all arrangements, and the control of .the proposed, tournament, would have to - be carried out by the Association. .Mr Dineen said that a number of- special bouts and two or three novice. competitions could be staged. Mr C. Campbell's motion, that the Temuka Club's application be received, was carried. A letter was received from ''the Christchurch Association, congratulating South Canterbury on -the success at the recent bouts, and thanking the Association t;or tlje hospitality shown to the Canterbury -team on its yisit to Timaru. The Christchurch 'Association extended an invitation to the South Canterbury team to meet Canterbury at Christchurch on December 10th. On the motion of Mr G. B. Lamborn, the recommendation of the Match Committhat the Christchurch Association V invitation be aecepted, was agreed to. • The following is the team: —Lightheavy, F. Sehimanski (Qlenavy); middle, A'. Birchfield. (GJenavy); welter, A. Wallace (Temuka); light, E. Wade (Timaru), J. Spillahe -(Temuka); feather, A. Currie (Temuka); flyweight, H. Cullimore (Timaru). Lawrence congratulated the officials on the efficient way in which the tournamept had been, eontrol|ed, and pointed out that much of the, success' was due to the able training of "the team. A most enthusiastic meeting of the -.committee iir connexion with the. forthcoming garden party, to be held at Mrs illi:vB. ;Johnstone's,, Otaio,. was, held, when Mrs P. B. Woodhouse. (president of the Anglican Ladies.' Guild) presided. .The. programme is long and varied, and includes amusements for young and. old. In. addition to these 1 thore will be a number of stalls. Competitions will in- < elude - ' sheep weight-guessing,- ' cake • weight-guessing, : best pound - of salted' I butter, best dozen hen eggs, baking, and a get lamb show. There will, also I be lawn tennis and deck tennis. If the I weather is good a large number .of i visitors are expected from Timaru and all the surrounding districts. FAIRLIE. ' Very changeable and unseasonable Weather has been experienced during the past week. . Shearing has commenced in the .district, and will shortly, become general. A very successful concert, arranged by Mrs Eagle and Mrs Shearp, was j given in the Presbyterian Sunday j School Hall. The hall was well , filled by an : appreciative audience, and the various items, which were of. a high standard, Were well received. Theproceeds of the concert'are in aid of the Christmas tree fund of the -summer flower show, which is to be held early in December. The Rev. A. Morton presided, and. the following programme was submitted:—Pianoforte solo by Mrs Shears'; solos by Mrs P. Miller, Miss Whitefield, Mrs Young, Mrsr M. E. -Eagle, Miss; C- Talbot, ..Messrs J. Burt, A. Edward, M. E. Eagle, and Rev. JT. T„ McWilliam; recitations by Miss Page, Miss I. Lyon, and Rev., A. Morton; trio by Messrs J. Burt, B. Trotter, and M. E. Eagle. After the concert those present were entertained to'supper by members of the Ladies' Guild. ARUNDEL. The; fortnightly social in the Howard Hall, -Arundel, was again most successful. TEMUKA. The matriculation examinations will be held in the Technical School, under the supervision of Mr D. Ferguson, M. A. There are about 20 candidates and the examination will commence on December Ist. The president of the 4 Woodbury branch of the Women's Institute presided at a special .meeting ol Institutes in the -Geraldine district,, which had been called sto make arrangements for the conference, ,;wMch' to take place at Geraldine next week. ST.The St. Andrewa of the Mothers' Union held its last meeting for the year on Wednesday afternoon. After a short. service at the church, members and visitors adjourned to the Vicarage, where afternoon tea was served , and novel competitions were held, 'the winners of the" competitions wer® Mrs J. Waimate, opened its- first* season this week when •there' was an Attendance of 45 ladies and a sprinkling of. men at the lawns, which are situated in the Methodist Parsonage grounds, Coronation street. Rev. W. B. Scott in addressing the gathering,; apologised for the absence of Mr. J. Bitchener,. M.P. He said that in the establishment of the club ; Mrfe Scott'and he had• fulfilled an am-, bition which' thej*' had' had in mind since-they had-. first«gone.. to Waimate. She said she did not know whether the club would allow men as members. That would have to be decided b.f the ladies of the club as a' whole. Mrs Scott went on to -say. she felt that a croquet green w&s needed in a place like Waimate; She did not know of any other town of the same size which did not have one. At the same time'she would have liked to have- seen gveens on public property; as in that case people would think they were more privileged to plav on them. She would like all to feel that they were just as privileged to plnv on .the greens where they were as if. they- were on public property. The membership at present was 35, but it was -not vet full • and ifc- w-ns pleasing that there were members other than Methodists. The Mayor (Mr G. Dash) was called upon to declare the season open. He paid, a tribute to the work of Mr Scott, sen., in connexion with the preparation of the greens. He stated that croquet came to England from France in 1598. The green was then a long straight course with two hiwh arches of iron at each end. In its present form the came appeared in England in the 19t.h century, and the hoops were "large enrniah for a child to crawl through. Mr Dash said he_ was delighted to have the opportunity tiy declare -open this: splendid acquisition to the assets of the town. Three cheers were given for Mrs Scott and Messrs Scott. The Mayoress played the first ball.
