MEETING OF CIVIC FEDERATION.

A meeting of the Sumner Civic Federation was held last evening, when Mr J. H. Thomas presided. There were also present:—Messrs S. K. Bassett (Burgesses' Association), E. T. Chitty (Rugby Club), C. E. Merry (Cricket Club), F. J. Adcoek (Business Men's Association), W. S. Burford (Surf and Life-Saving Club), and C. J. Kit© (secretary). Mr Chitty reported on the progress made with the collection for the purpose of purchasing a wireless set for Mr W. Fen ton. He said that the arrangements were well in hand, and the secretary was instructed to get in touch with the Woolston Band, of which Mr Fenton is an ex-member, with a view to arranging a date for a benefit concert on the Pier rotunda. A sub-committee,' comprising Messrs J. H. Thomas, E, T. Chitty, and C. J. Kite, was set up to make arrangements for collectors. In connexion with the proposed revival of the Sumner Band, it was. stated that in the event of reformai tion, there would bo plenty of players available. The stumbling block at present was the matter of finance, and it was felt that if Sumner residents were informed of the amount of money sunk in band instruments, they would not bo so apathetic towards the proposed revival. The secretary was instructed to call a public meeting at an early date. The secretary reported that the Sumner Athletio Club had joined the Federation, and had appointed two delegates. In the matter of improvements m the telephone service, in which the Federation has interested itself, it was decided to collect all available data, and to writ© to the member "for the District (Mr J. McCombs) asking him to arrange a date for a deputation to meet the PostmasterGeneral (the Hon. J. B. Donald), when all the information would be put before him, and the mattec discussed. Messrs J. H. Thomas, C. J. Kite, E. T. Chitty, and F. J. Adcock were appointed members of a deputation to meet the Postmaster-General. TJie Sumner Beautifying and BeachImprovement Association wrote stating that the question of joining the Federation had been discussed at a recent meeting. Members were agreed that the" amended constitution would form a good working basis. The executive thought that a change ol policy being involved, the matter should stand over till the _ annual meeting of the Association, in April next. Mr Merry moved that the Association be allowed representation on tlje Federation in the meantime, until they were able to join. The Sumner Sports Association, wrote stating that while thev were m sympathy with the principles underlying the Federation, the appointment of delegates would mean dual representation, and it was suggested that the Federation should consider the advisability of including _ among its vice-presidents, the president or the United Sports Association. It was decided to reply that the officers had already been appointed for the present year, and that officers were appointed from delegates to the Federation. . . The question of promoting a gala was discussed at length, and .dolegates were unanimously of the opinion that a gala at Christmas or New Year would prov© an unqualified success. . v The secretary was instructed to get> in touch with the Borough Council, to obtain permission to organise a gala, and provided this is forthcoming, to communicate with the affiliated bodies to obtain their support.
