Bowling. . j rlle Greymouth Bowling Club has decided that in handicap games substitutes must be of the same handicap as, or of a S re ®-ter handicap than, the players replaced. In championship games no substitute will be allowed except on account of illness or absence from town. Inquest. The inquest concerning the death of Mrs Mary Oates, following a motor collision with the Ross train at the Weld street crossing, at Hokitika, on October 30 th, was resumed this morning before Mr D. J. Evans, Coroner, at Hokitika. Mr appeared on behalf of the Railway Department, and Mr Treacy watched the proceedings for Mr Paul Ronton, the owner and driver of the car. Evidence was given by the driver and fireman of the Ross train.

Sergeant King said he did not consider r the crossing a dangerous one. A motor accident had occurred almost on the same spot five months ago. Paul Holmes Reriton, who was driving the car at the time of the collision, said the only time that he had realised the train was near was when it struck the car. The point of impact was about a foot behind the driver's seat. The railway engine seemed to carry the car bodily forward, broadside on, for a distance, then swung it to the right and carried it back a short distance. The windscreen of the car was covered with rain water, and the wiper was going. The wiper would wipe a portion only. The other portion and the window on the driver's right were hazy as a result of mist. None of the occupants of the car had heard the train whistle. The Coroner returned a verdict that Mrs Mary Oates died at the Westland Hospital, Hokitika, on October 30th, from shock and concussion, resulting from a collision at a street crossing between a railway train and a motor-car, Mrs Oates being a passenger in the motor-car in question, which was driven by Paul Holmes Renton, of Hokitika, ironmonger.
