NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

Tides. It will be high tide at 1.44 p.m. on the beach to-day and at 2.28 p.m. in the river. To-morrow- —2.11 a.m. and 2.36 p.m. on the beach and 2.55 a.m. and 3.20 p.m. in the river. Tree Planting. At the last meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council the Mayor (Mr J. H. Shaw) made reference to the large number of trees which had been planted in the borough recently. Mr Shaw spoke of the generosity of Mr_ R. H. Andersen, who, in addition to being instrumental in securing a large number of trees, had assisted in the planting. Unfair Criticism. The allegations made by a Christchurch business man concerning the behaviour of "bach" parties at # New Brighton have annoyed many residents. The consensus of opinion seems to bo that there has been little justification for such statements, and that in apy ease the complainant should have informed the proper authorities at the time, instead of making his allegations public at so late a date. Ladies' Hockey. The record of the New Brighton ladies' junior A hockey team this y oa * is a very creditable one. In the final match of the competition the team beat Bangiora by two goals to one in the hardest match of the season. This team has won the competition for the first time for some years, the record being as follows: —Matches played, 15; won, 12; lost, 2} drawn, 1. The following are the names of the team:—A. Hoses (captain), M. Turner, B. Cook, P. James, R. Burns, V. Patten, H. Warn, R. Messervy, M. Hill, M. Moses, M. A. Moses. Miniature Rifles. During the week members of the New Brighton Ladies' Miniature Rifle Club fired the finals for the elub championship and fourth competition. Following are the results: — Championship—Mrs Buschl 1, A. Moses 2. _ Owlea Grand Aggregate—Miss Turner 1, Mrs Ball 2. Fourth Competition—Mrs Ragg 1, Mrs Moses 2. B Grade Championship—Mis» A. Moses 1. Tyro Championship—Miss M. Turner. The weekly practice resulted in some good scores being registered. Following are the totals:—Mrs Nicholls 69, Miss Turner 69, Miss Moses 67, Mrs Stokes 67, Mrs Bagg 67, Mrs Moses 67, Mrs Ball 67, Mrs Buschl 67. The silent competition was won by Miss M. Turner. The annual match' between teams from the ladies' and men's clubs will be flred to-night. Building Permits. The return of building permits issued in the borough to August Ist, 1930, shows an increase in the value, although there was a decrease in the number issued compared with the corresponding period last year. South Brighton Croquet Club. On Wednesday afternoon members of the South Brighton Croquet Club held their second whist drive in the Oasis Tearooms. There was again a good awnfcir of play*r*j rJaA * most enjoyable afternoon was spent. Mesdames Bagg, Weir, and Munro were the prizewinners. - Good Templars. The fortnightly meeting of the Union Juvenile Temple was held in the Band Hall, New Brighton, there being a good attendance. The Temple was visited by the Grand Superintendent of Juvenile Work, the of the Bumner au&EeeJcenham Temples, and members frijm the Hope of Christchurch Bodge. The ritual competition, which is being hqia between the five 1 Temples in and around Christchurch, was judged during, the evening,and two new members were initiatecF into the Order. Bro. A. Rennie gave an address on the work of the adult lodge "in Christchurch. At the close of the' TXnlon Temple, there Waq a meeting of the Bawhiti Junior Lodge, at which one candidate was initiated. The programme for the evening took the form of a fancy dress party> the prizes for the best dresses being won by Sister Jean Conyers (Gipsy Fortune Teller) and Bro. Horace WUhinS (Nigger Minstrel). Bro. A. Bennie, QJiJiTW., presented the lodge with a charter, and congratulated- the members on the progress that is being made* At the present time the lodge •is the largest junior lodge in the Dominion. Association Football. L On Thursday afternoon the New Brighton schoolboys fielded a weak team ! against West Christchurch, on tho Bawhiti Domain, in the last match of the competition; From the kick-off the Visitors displayed a good knowledge of the game and soon had the home side bustled. The score opened when Pockson kicked in to his own goal, in an endeavour to pass back to the goalie. Bendall levelled the score a little later with a good goal. Shortly after the commencement of the second half, Weir juase a ,great bolo run for West Christchurch, and scored with a fast shot, making the score 2—l. Within five minutes of time, IL Wilkins, who . was always prominent in the Brighton forwards* netted .* swift one, and the. game ended 2 all. The New Brighton boys have now won the competition after compiling the following record : Matches played, 12; won, 10; lost, 1; drawn, 1 j total poiifts, 21. The official opening of the new Free Kindergarten School will take place at the premises, 168 Seaview road, at 10.30 a'.m. on Monday. The Mayor (Mr J.

H. Shaw) will perform the ceremony, which will be attended by members pf the general committee of the Christchurch Free Kindergarten Association. Twenty-two pupils have been enrolled. Two teachers have been engaged and everytlnng points to the success of the school. A special invitation to be present at this function is. extended to mothers, who are asked to give the project their whole-hearted support. Band Concert. The New Brighton Municipal Band will give a concert in the rotunda at 3 o'clock to-morrow afternoon. The proceeds will be in aid of the Mayor's Unemployment Fund. Inter-Borough Bugby. The following team will represent New Brighton at the inter-borough Rugby match to be played on tho Rawhiti Domain this afternoon:- R. Butterfield, W. Sweeney, J. Duncan, J. G. Hay, C. L. Stokes, B. Seales, H. Scales, H. Evans, H. Stokes, G. Toon, G. Kemp, J. Miller, N. McCree, and F. Alabaster. Emergencies:—W. Gray, C. W. Smith, A. C. Shcphard, and K. Handle New Scout House. After five weekg of unselfish work on the part of members of the committee, the new Scout House in the Domain is beginning to assume definite shape. During the last, fortnight the building has been a scone of activity, and now, with only the roof to complete, it is expected that the opening ceremony will be performed in about three weeks. Methodist Church. ,On Wednesday and Thursday evening, members of the Combined Methodist Boys' and Girls' Clubs gave a most enjoyable concert and gymnastic display in the Bunday School Hall, before large audiences. The performers worked under the leadership of Mrs Pearn, Mrs Hulme, and Mr R. Owen. Personal. The Rev. 0. S. Pearn is at present confined to his bed with influenza. New Bridge. . The activities of the contractors for the new bridge have aroused a great doal of interest during the last few days, the centre of attraction being the operations of the large derrick. Piledriving was commenced on Thursday afternoon, and work on tho approaches is well advanced. Power Shortage. In response to the request for economy in the matter of electricity consumption, shopkeepers and residents have been managing with as little light as possible lately. The darkness of the streets has not been without its effect upon business people, while resident* have been made to appreciate the benefits of their well-lit Btreets. Card Evenings. The weekly whist drive conducted by the New Brighton Bowling Club was a successful function. Mesdames Lauchlari and Wyatt, and Messrs Lawrence and Barrett were the prize-winners. At the weekly whist drive held on Thursday evening by the New Brighton Croquet Club there was a good attend* ance. The prize-winners were Mrs Payne and Mr Walker. The funds for the Free Kindergarten School will benefit as a result of an enjoyable card evening held at the residence of Mrs J. Bellamy, Lonsdale street, on Thursday evening. Prizes were won by Mrs Burtt, Miss G. Bellamy, and Mr Mapstone. Bowling. The committee of the New Brighton Bowling Club have issued Invitations to the opening of the green, which will take place on Saturday aftornoon next. The green is in perfect order.
