PERSONAL. (SPECIAL TO THE CBESS.) GREYMOUTH, September il>. Nurse M. Boyd, of the Westland Hospital, who is shortly to be married to Mr ■E. Rooncy, Kanieri, and haa lesigned hor position in the Hospital after three and a half years' service, was presented by the matron and staff with a silvermounted salad bowl and servers. Jockey Club. The Keefton Jockey Club held a meeting when the president (Mr E. W. Spencer) presided. It was decided that the Club be represented at the meeting of delegates of .Racing and Trotting Clubs, at Greymouth, and Messrs E. W. cSpencer and J. B. Auld were appointed the Keefton Club's delegates. The Programme Committee submitted the programme for the Midsummer Meeting, with stakos totalling £1650. Progress league. The Westland Progress League met last evening at Hokitika. Dr. Teichelmaun (president) presided. The Marton Chamber of Commerce wrote suggesting j a limitation of hire-purchase agreements, which were now being extended to luxuries. It was resolved to support the request for representations to the Government on the matter. Mr P. J. McLean (president of the Chamber of Commerce, Greymouth), and the Keefton Progress League wrote in regard to assistance to the gold-mining industry, to ensure a revival of which would assist unemployment. It was resolved to give general support to proposals to encourage the gold-mining industry, by aiding the production of gold. Matchless Mine. The Labour Department is taking a hand in the recont dispute at the Matchless Mine at Reefton, and is issuing summonses against the strikers. Cases will be heard at the Magistrate's Court here shortly. Cricket. An enthusiastic meeting of members of the Technical Old Boys' Association decided to form a Cricket Club, and to enter a third grade team in the West Coast Cricket Association's competition. Mr I. E. Steel was elected secretary. Daffodil Show. The winners of trophies in the various sections of the Daffodil Show, held under the auspices of Holy Trinity Church yesterday, were announced today as follows: —Most points in cut flowers, Mrs Olliver; special prize to the competitor supplying the greatest number of entries in the decorative section, Mrs Dalzell; best wooden toy, O. N. Olliver; most points in the bre/id section, Miss Cunliffe and Mrs Barrett equal; most points in cake section, Mrs Walton and Mrs Barrett equal; best fruit cake, M rs Barrett; most point# in domestic soction, Mrs Barrett; for most points in children's section, N. Musson. Chamber of Commerce. The annual meoting of the Greymouth Chamber of Commerco was hold this p.fteruoon. The president (Mr P. J. McLean) presided over a good attendance. The annual report and balancesheet for the year wore adopted. The former referred to the fact that during the year the West Coast has been making steady progress. In the borough of Greymouth building permits issued totalled in value, £62,872. Port improvements to cost £70,963, spread over a period of 3J to 4 years, to be provided for out of revenue, had been approved by the Bngineer-in-Chie£ to the Pubfto Works Department, and should materially improve the port of Greyhiouth. Basketball and Rugby football matches were plaved at'Hokitika to*day between the Reefton and Hokitika District High Schools. In the A basketball match Hokitika beat Reefton 11-4. In the B match Reefton beat Hokitika 7-2. The * football was won by Hokitika 26-6. The Mines.. A report that notices of dismissal Issued to Stockton miners had been withdrawn proves to be incorrect. The notices take effect on Monday, when the mine will revert to a single shift. Over fifty men are concerned. The Grey Valloy and Dobson mines, which have worked only 8t full days during tho past three weeks, will work both shifts o».Monday. Cobden Tire Brigade. The twelfth annual fancy dress ball held by the Cobden Fire Brigade this evening was a great success. The prizes were awarded by the judges as follows:—Bost fancy dress, Dorothy Mclntyre 1, Flo Melntyre 2; boys, Bob Mclntyre 1, Harry Page 2. Most original costume, Nancy MoKane 1, Helen McLean 2. Tiny tots, Moira Orange, Zona Sheehan, and Coleen Crooks, equal. The Ketch Elsie. Particulars to hand regarding the stranding of the keteh Elsie are to the effect that she ran ashore one mile from Kaiangaron Bluff, five miles from the main road at Wilson's, and nine miles from Bruce Bay. The crew got ashore and made a canvas shelter on the beach and awaited daylight. A few chains from where the ketch is stranded is the Karangnroa lagoon, into which the vessel could be launched. The question of abandoning the vessel will be placed before the directors. South Westland. Seen to-day by a representative of Thb Press, Mr T. A. Johnston, district Manager of Public Works, who has just returned fr jm a visit if inspection to far South Westland, stated that the road formation between Weheka and Saltwater river is being carried out as an unemployed roliof undertaking, and is well ndvam-ed. The section from Woheka to the Fox river had been formed and metalled, and the formation was completed between the Fox and Cook rivers. It is anticipated that the whole of the formation to Saltwater river will be completed by the end of this year. Apart from railway suspension bridges at the Fox and Cook rivers, the bridging of Bullock and Saltwater creeks has to be carried out, The whole of the road between Greymouth and Weheka is in good order. Genera] widening of the road has been carried out and sharp corners removed. Mr Johnston went over the route of the Waitangi South Bank road, which runs from the north end of the Wataroa settlement to the sea coast at Roto bridge, over the Waitangiroto river. He was accompanied by a number of settlers, who pointed out the general prospects for development, and stressed the necessity for improved access.
