RUGBY. MAORIS V. CANTERBURY. TO-DAY'S BIG MATCH. The curtain will be rung down on the local Kugby season so far as big matches are concerned to-day when a Canterbury team will try conclusions with the South Island Maoris at Lancaster Park. The Maoris, who are noted for playing dashing football, will be represented by a powerful pack and an enterprising lot of backs, and may be depended upon to keep the local lads busy. On the King's Birthday the Maoris defeated a tedm representing the North Island natives by a substantial margin, and by so doing qualified to hold the Prince of Wales Cup and Te Mori Rose Bowl. Their forwards include T. Manning, W. Hopa, Tom Robinson, and J. Mnnihera, from Canterbury, and among the others will be G. Purdue, one of the best of the Southland representative side this year. 11, Phillips (Nelson), W Reid (Nelson), and R. J. Bell (Southland) provide the nucleus of a strong set of backs, who may be confidently expected to throw the ball about with abandon. The Canterbury side will not be the strongest that the province is capable of putting In the field, for the reason that a good proportion of the best players will represent the Red and Blacks against Otago at Dunedin to-day, but it is nevertheless composed of "tryers" who will no doubt do their best to play themselves into favour with the seloptors in the hope of being next year's representatives. The forwards include such top-notcliers as A. I. Cottrell and Geo. Scrimshaw, while the most striking name among the backs is C. J. Oliver, who on his day is a brilliant player. The teams are as follows: South Island Maoris. Full-back: P. Huria (Canterbury). Three-quarters: H. Phillips (Marlborough), W. Reid (Nelson), D. Tainui (Ashburton). Five-eighths: R. J. VIVIAN CUP PINAL. > In the last match between Addington and Sydenham the latter provided a sensation by overcoming their doughty opponents in the last few minute* and scoring a meritorious win. Addington have been strengthened by the return of J. Amos, and to-day's match at Monica Park, which will decide the fate of the Vivian Cup. will probably draw the best crowd this year.
