RESTRICTIONS ON MIGRATION.
CANADA AND UNITED STATES. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION —BY EtF.CTBIC TEI-EGnAPH- -COPYlltlSttr.) NEW YORK, September 17. Enquiries at Ottawa elicited the information that no new restrictons on white immigration have been imposed. The cmy restrictions apply ing are in respect to the amount of money in possession of an immigrant and to contract labour, duo to the current depression and extern..*- unemployment. With the coming ni autumn and winter, the immigration authorities are more closely applying these qualifications than at other times. The contract labour regulation is of ye.irs standing, and prohibits the entry into Canada oi immigrants under labour contracts, except in oases where the Minister for Immigration decides that their presence is required. The Immigration Department at Ottawa, moreover, has denied reports from Vancouver that sdme 200 Australians seeking entry into Canada are being held up and that some of them arc in danger of being sent back. The officials state that only ones or two Australians were detained. Restrictions on immigration into the United States, of a similar nature, were also announced at Washington a few davs ago by the State Department, due to unemployment in the United States. Consuls abroad have been instructed to examine applicants for visas more closely, for the purpose of limiting the number of entries, under a provision of the law which enables yxclusion when there is danger of an npr>li"nnt becoming n "public charge." Ordinary travellers are in no way affected, either in Canada or the United States.
