WIRELESS TELEPHONY
AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND. (FROM OUS OWM ColinS3i>otrDE!»T.) SYDNEY, September 4. Preliminary tests indicate that very shortly the wireless telephony service between Australia and New Zealand should be ready for public use. A few weeks ago Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia), Ltd., manufactured and despatched to the -uder of the New Zealand Government the necessary equipment for the New Zealand end of the wireless telephone. This has now been installed and tests are being made with a view to adjusting the transmitting and receiving equipment. The first conversations, says Mr E. T. Fisk, managing director of Amalga mated Wireless, have been very satisfactory, and in a very little while the apparatus will be adjusted and tuned to give the best results. The system used is similar to that adopted in the wireless telephone service between Australia and London. The transmission from Sydney originates at Pennant Hills, and the voice of the person speaking in New Zealand is received at the Amalgamated Wireless station at La Perouse. The New Zealand transmitter is situated in Wellington. Although the reception and transmission of the wireless telephone conversation are carried out by Amalgamated Wireless, the co-operatiun of the Postal Department iB necessary in order that telephone subscribers may be able to speak from their own homes, through the Departmental telephone exchanges. When the New Zealand-Australia service is established New Zealanders will bo able to speak to Great Britain and Europe, using the link already provided between Sydney and London. By special arrangement, Reuter's world service, in addition to othei special sources of information is used in the compilation of the overseas intelligence published in this iREUo, and all rights therein in Australia and New Zealand are reserved.
