Tho ''Evening News" says:— "His Majesty the King has called for a full enquiry and report into the constitutional questions arising regarding the succession to the Throne through the birth of the second daughter of tho Duke and Duchess of York, whose status in regard to succession is not defined by law. "A great conflict Of opinion at present exists in Court and legal circles. The Original assumption was that the Princess ranked fourth in the line of succession, coining after Princess Elizabeth. But the law apparently docs not give ouo sister precedence. The last Act of Succession was made in 1689, when William HI. was reigning alone, after the death of Queen Mary.. Although the Act defines the order of male heirs, it does not give priority to elder daugh ters, while, if the daughters became joint Queens, a ridiculous position would arise, ft might be well to take stops to obviate this, even as a remote contingency. Upon the report submitted to the King will depend whether new legislation is noccssavy." UNDERGROUND RAILWAYS. BIG EXTENSION SCHEME IN LONDON. (unman official wireless.) RUGBY, September 8. The first' stage of tho £12,000,000 schomo for developing London's underground railway system will start in a tor ..night, when work will begin on the tube railway oxtension from Einsbury Park northward for four and a hall miles to southgate. and then through the open counu'v to Cock Fosters. It is estimated that the scheme, in one way or another, will provide employment for '20.000 men for two years and a half. In addition to the extension to Cock Fosters. which will cost over £5 000.000 tho scheme provides for two lines from Hammersmith to Northfiekls, on which £3,UJJ,OOO will bo spent, and the reconstruction, nt a cost of £ 1.0C0.000, of certain stations in Central Loudon. GROWTH OF TRAFFIC. This concentrated eflort, the largest ever embarked upon by the Underground group in so short a poriod as ihreo years lias been made necessary by the phenomenal growth of London traffic in ihe years since the war, says tho '"telegraph." It is estimated that it will take two years to complete thv Einsbury Park-Cocklostcrs section, but as soon as the line ha.« been carried as far as Amos qrovo. roughly onehalf of the total distance ot seven and a hi:lf miles of track, it is the com pair's intention to mako it available to the public. The construction work will involve tunnelling from Einsbury park nearly to Am.is mrovo. There tho line will como out into the open, and will be carried across Arnos park by a viaduct, to disappear into a tunnel on the north side where the land rises considerably comintr into the open again at Chase side. Timlin the 7\ miles of track thero will be four miles of tunnc The western ex tension from Hammersmith to North Holds will follow the line ot the District Railway, and will be above ground all the way Another improvement to bo put in hand concurrently with those already mentioned is Hie provision of interchange facilities between the British Museum station on the Central London Railway and HoJUnrn station, on the Piccadilly line. At present the ]ourncv from the Rank to Piccadilly by Underground entails getting out at Rritisli Museum, coming to the road level, and walking back to Holborn station. As an aid to employment these comprehensive schemes will provide over 20.000 men with work jji the various «ites for nearly three years.
