COUNTY COUNCILS.

MOUNT HERBERT. Ac the monthly meeting .of tho Mount Herbert County Council, there were present: Messrs l'l. W. Coop (chairman), J. A. Gellety, A. R. 11. Gardiner, E. W. Gray, R. A. Anderson, C. Pope, .K. Gobbie, and J. W. Guy. The chairman moved that a letter of condolence bo forwarded to the relatives of the late Mr W. Gobbie. Mr Gebbie, he said, was well known and respected throughout the district. He was the eldest son ol the late Mr W. Gebbie, who was one 'of the original settlers of Teddington. The motion was passed in silence, mem hers standing. It was reported that the Public Works Department aro making satisfactory progress with the surveying of the new road from Purau to Charteris Bay. When completed the work will be commenced by unemployed men. The Medical Officer of Health for Canterbury wrote forwarding a draft by-law relating to the construction of chemical closets, which he hoped the Council would adopt at an early date. Mr John T. Hay, Church Bay (through his solicitor), wrote protesting against the proposed new road passing through his property. The debit balance was reported to be £1035 ASHLEY. The Ashley County Council met at Loburn. Present: Crs. L\ R. Hutchison (chairman), Barwell, Bennett, Ensor, McCracken, Metherell, Pulley, and Wilson. Mr Wilson reported on the Progress League's visit to Lees Valley, in regard to bridges needed. Mr H. J. Francis wrote from the Valley on this subject. The Council expressed the opinion that it was a clear Ministerial duty to provide the bridges. Membersagreed to attend a conference shortly to be held ot Oxford. The chairman reported that ho had seen tho District Engineer with regard to Dobson's road, and that Mr Langbein had agreed to make an early inspection of this road. On account of the authorised gates across various roads of the county, it was decided to ask the solicitor to prepare a by-law covering the requirements of the Act with regard to such gates. Mr C Morris was given the. occupancy of a portion of the strip of land vosted in the Council on the south of the river-bed road. The usual donation was voted for the Progress League. In response to a request from the Minister for Transport, the Council classed all the roads of the county as second-clasß, permitting, of loads totalling eight tons being carried on them. Mr Pulley registered his dissent. Mr Robert Feather submitted an estimate for a bridge over the station creek ford, spanning the forty feet of width by hewn gums and planking. The Council did not think that present finance would permit the construction. Messrs Dohrman, of Oxford, tendered, for the Lees Valley whare at tho upper bridge lit £63 Bs. This was accepted. Mr R. T. Matthews interviewed' the Council with regard to the clearing of an overgrown watercourse through his land, and ar-

rangements were made for immediate attention. Some transfers of property were, notified. Arrears of rates in certain cases are. to be put in the hands of the Council's solicitor. WAIPARA. The monthly meeting of the Waipara County Council was held, when > there were present: Messrs N. D. Campbell (chairman), W. K. McAlpine, J. G. Whyte, J. Quigley, H. E. Fincham, and A. T. Allan. The treasurer reported that the rates were being paid very slowly, only £789 having been received during the month. The works overseer reported on general maintenance over the whole of the county.. The damage done by the recent heavy rain was not very extensive, he'said. Representation having been made to the Council'-for'a picnic ground at the Lankey Cutting bridge, it was decided to,apply to the Land.Board for an area to bo vested, in the Council as a domain. Mr G. Ruther-. ford had consented to surrender a portion of land leased by him for'the purpose. The clerk was instructed -to thank Mr Rutherford for his co-operation in the mattor. ■■ : Mr G. Arres wrote in reference to water banking up on bis land at the Pyramid Valley corner. It was decided to put in a culvert to carry th'e water away. Mr M. J.' o'Carroll wrote in regard to water on thV Birchdale road. It -was de-. cided to get Mr Toogood to put, the water into its proper channel. Mr W. Elliot forwarded a letter setting out conditions under which the Oouncil could open up a quarry on his property. The terms were accepted by the Council. Messrs Harper and Company wrote in reference to the Peaks drainage scheme, for* warding correspondence suggesting the enlargement of the area. The Council decided, that it could take no action in the" matter. The clerk was instructed'to arrange for footpaths to be formed in the Waikari and .Horsley Down cemeteries. The tender of A. Kofoed was accepted for the election of the Waipara river britee.
