HORNBY. Mr F. McTeigue presided over an ordinary meeting of the Hornby School Committee, when all members were present. The teacher's report showed that the number of scholars at the end of the term was 328, and the average attendance 287. Mr Mathews, of the Post Office Savings Bank, visited the school during the month and explained to the senior pupils the arrangements his Department had made to encourage children to save their money. Parents' donations handed in for the month totalled «9 2b 6d. It was decided to improve the playground. Five pounds was voted for this purpose. Photographs of the boys' football team were received, and it was decided to entertain the team when the shield is presented. All accounts were passed for payment, and Messrs Whale and Wastney were appointed a Visiting Committee for the month. TAI TAPU. Extremely cold weather has been experienced throughout the Tai Tapu district since Saturday morning, when a strong south-westerly gale prevailed, accompanied by rain, sleet, and snow. The surrounding bills are covered with snow, Owing to the wet state of the ground, no progress can bo made with fiold work. At the weekly social on Sa' irday evening the prizes for the competition were presented by Mr R. Willan, and were won by Mrs Barnett and Mr Moody (Lincoln). There was a light coating of snow halfway down the hillsides. SPRINGSTON SOUTH. Rain set in at Springston South on Saturday morning. During the afternoon, however, the weather cleared, but showery conditions during the night gave place heavy rain, accompanied by sleet find snow, and a b.tterly cold wind. The monthly meeting of the prebbleton Mothers' Union was held in the parish room at Prebbleton, the president (Mrs H. B. Jones) occupying the chair. The annual diocesan report and balance-sheet were read. The programme for the remainder of the year was arranged. The Bev. G. A. Naylor bag been asked to address the next meeting. Miss Ala Jones has returned to the vicarage after a holiday spent in Ash' burton, A cheery little card party was given at her home by Mrs C. S. Hands, when frizes for the most points scored during he evening were presented to Mrs \V. Hands and Mr MeNally. An enjoyable and successful danoe, controlled by the School Committee, was held in the Public Hall on Saturday evening. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs W. Kolkman, and Miss S, Cheny and Mr R. Cheny were successful in the lucky spot dance. Mr R. Woods's Band supplied the dance music, and Mr J. Yeatman was M.O. Juvenile members' of the community are eagerly anticipating the children's fancy dress dance, the proceeds of which are to be devoted to the school library. Weather conditions during the weekend were wintry. Frequent showers of sleet, with a slight sprinkling of enow, foil on Sunday morning. Members of the All Saints' choir and of the Music Society an» busily engaged, under the direction of the Bev. Hubert Jones, in practising the music for the Choral Festival in which they hope to take part next month. BROOMFIELD. The Broomfleld School Committee held their fortnightly social, when there was a fair attendance. Prizes given by Mr and Mrs J, W. Streeter, were won by Miss M. McFarlane and Mrs W. Briggs, and Messrs Chris. Croft and Chas. Wilson. Supper was dispensed by the ladies. Music for the dance was played by Mrs Ferguson. Mrs J. C. Croft Was M.C. Bough stormy weather is being experienced at Broomfleld, making conditions particularly bad for young lambs. BELFAST. A meeting of the Belfast branch of the British and Foreign Bible Societj was held in the Presbyterian Church. OWiiig to the serious illness of Mrs King, sen., the president (Mrs McLean) occupied the chair. A vote ol sympathy with Mrs King was passed. The amount collected from various districts showed a slight increase, a total of £9 being handed in to the Christchurch branch. There was a good attendant at the liewly formed Bible Class at Hororata on Sunday morning in connexion with the Presbyterian Church. Mrs B, &eltie was leader. Mr and Mrs gwanson are leaving Hororata for Tlmaru at the end of the week to live there. They have sold their business, Miss M. Hunt spent the week-end at Mount Cook.
