A GIFT OF £2,000,000 TO ENGLAND.

An Am«rican eitieen, Mr Bdw»rd Harkness, has made the magnificent gift of about £2,000,000 to be laid oat for the benefit of England. There are five trustees —Mr Stanley Baldwin, Mr John Buchan, Lord M«<millan. Sir Josiah Stamp, and Sir James Ervine—and the secretary is an eminent Civil serrant. There are to be, according to cho 'Man chests Guardian's" London correspondent, no conditions imposed on the trustees in the disposal, and no definition of it* objects, but that it will be used for educational and cultural causes. It h believed that it was his respect for Mr Baldwin's character and the side of England that lw represented that decided Mr Harkness to make this gift. Jlr Harkness is said to hove much in common with Mr Baldwin—knowand love of the country, and especially its traditional ways and modest beauties, and he is also a !ov«;i----of art and letters. He founded the Commonwealth Fund, which gives thirty scholarships in the United States at £6OO a year to British graduates, and he has given great bequests to American Universities —£20,000.000 to Yale and £4,000,000 to HarvardIt is expected, from the character of the trustees, that tho preservation of countrv life and beauty will be one of the causes that will get their chief attention, but nothing, of course, has yet been considered.
