USEFUL ADVICE.
PURPOSE OF SIR OTTO NIEMEYER'S VISIT. MR L. A. PAISH'S COMMENT. New Zealand would have been illadvised had the Government allowed such an eminent financier as Sir Otto Niemever to come to the Antipodes without visiting the Dominion is the opinion of Mr L. A. Paish, British Trade Commissioner. Sir Otto, said Mr Paißh yesterday, had not come out to lecture the people, but to point out how a return to economic stability might be made most successfully. He might not even be able to give New Zealand much valuable advice, but anything which he might say would be well worth heeding. There was no danger that, by his visit, New Zealand might be grouped with Australia in the minds of the London financiers as being in a desperate position, because the distinction between the two countries was quite well- known to them. If the visit tended to catalogue the two countries in the minds of the English public, it did not matter much, but he was confident that this would not happen. Official circles were far too well informed. The suggestion that Sir Otto Niemeyer had come as the bailiff to Australia of course was ridiculous. It was in the spirit of friendly assistance and co-operation that he had come, and Mr Paish was sure that his visit to New Zealand would prove well worth while. Innate ability had brought him to the top. After heading the list of his year in the Public Service examinations, Sir Otto had entered the Treasury at about the age of 23, and had risen rapidly, bat. others also recognised his worth, with the result that a Government Department had been unable to hold him permanently.
