TRENTHAM NOTES.

FORM AT MARTON. [TBS PBEBB SpaolAl Serrice.l WELLINGTON, September 8. J. H. Jefferd is at Wanganui with a team of five horses —Star Stranger, Cylinder, Love Song, Vandyke, and the two-year-old Actaeon. The lastnamed by Hunting Song—Gay, is a brother to False Scent, who was expected to be a good three-year-old until ho became affected in the wind. After ttoe Wanganui Meeting they will go on to Avondale and Auckland. The form of the majority of the two-year-olds last season indicated that there was a probability of a strong three-year-old contingent this present term. Results to date nhow that there la every chance of the three-year-olds this season being an exceptionally good lot. Three of them won races at Marton on Saturday—lmamint, Pakitere, and Autopay—and although the company was only hack class, they will develop Jbetter form before long. The moat attractive two-year-old in the parade at Marton on Saturday was Fernden's sister, Korokio. There is no doubt that at the 75gna Mr W. Jury pafd for her at the Sydney sales, ho has got a bargain. She is a readymade galloper with plenty of pace and she should soon get on to the winning list. She will have her first race in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui on Saturday, in which she will have the services of H. Gray. Limosin was having his first race for two months when ho ran in the Hailway Handicap at Marton, and m tho meantime, due to soreness, he has not done a great deal on the tracks Ho made a very fine showing and but for being forced over extra ground 011 the turn, he would have been closer at the finish. It was a good effort for a fresh horse. lmamint's Good Performance. He performance of lmamint in winning tne Trial Plate at Marton was in Itself a good one, but circumstances make it a lot better than it appeared. Some time back she had the misfortune to rupture a tendon sheath in the off foreleg, and A. Tinker has had a lot of trouble with her. As a result of only a few weeks' work, she is not nearly so forward as he would like her to be at this stage, and he is afraid that there is the chance that the race may send her back instead of improving her. lmamint is now ineligible for the maiden event on the first day at Wanganui, but if she suffers no ill effects from Saturday's race, she will be a runner on the second day. Her subsequent engagements include the three-year-old classics at Avondale and Auckland. The backing of Wallaruh in the maiden event at Marton was justified, for he beat all but the winner, and she is good class. Wallaruh had a couple of races last season, so that he has been given every chance By Hunting Bong from Wallaby, hj« is carrying on the traditional galloping abilities of his sire's stock, ana on the dam's side ho comes from another successful family. Wallaby is by Wolawa from Sanguinary, dam of Royal Blood and Hunting Call, and of Sangfroid, tho dam of Coon Song. Out of Luck. The three-year-old Roßsendale gelding Appledore looked in nice order when he went out to run in the Trial Flate at Marton, and he ran a good race. He lost a prominent early position after going a furlong- or so, but was' running on again in the straight. Hit should be in good order for events in the near fnture. The luck of the same stable was out with Tenterden and ttaskier. Both drew bad marbles and got very poorly off in their races. W. H. Dwyer's lack was ont at Marton with Paratoo and Zarene. In a field of 20 in the Trial Plate, Paratoo drew 17 at the post and precisely the same thing happened in tne last race, there being 20 runners with Zarene drawing 17 at thejpost. Both showed plenty of speed. They might not have beaten the winners with better luck, but as it was they had no chance. The connexions of Autopay were very confident of snooess in tne concluding event at Mairton, and they were fully justified. He bouAced out smartly from No. 7 at the post and nothing was good enough to beat him. As a two-year-old last season, Autopay showed a lot of promise. He won a double at the Wanganui February Meeting, and then finished second at Manawatq to Green Linnet and to Open Cheque at Masterton. He went oil form towards the end of his racing, but he showed on Saturday that he had not only wintered well but hae come back with brilliant possibilities. His dam Trebelli 11., is an English bred mare imported in 1911 by Mr John Qrigg. being by Thrush from Dramatica, by St. Simon. Paper Money, the sire of Autopay, has two strains of Galopin on his sire's side and is also a great grandson of St. Simon, He has always endowed his stock with brilliance, and in Autopay he has got one who looks like being as speedy as any that have been hitherto raced. Track Work No Guide. * How track ! work can lead one astray is well exemplified in the case of Eoyal Routine. In a trial he did not let Acora in, yet she won tho open sprint at the Marton Meeting, and he could run only third in a hack race. It was on this gallop that he was backed as a certainty on Saturday. He is a speedy galloper who was possibly backed too soon, a common failing at this time of the year, and it was in addition, his first appearance since last season. He was a good galloper then, running only three times, and winning at his last start. He is another qf the Hunting Songs, and is out of Eoyal Moment, the dam of Royal Damon. His breeder, Mrs S. G. Hutchinson, has a two-year-old and also a yearling brother to him. The Lucullus* mare Veronese, was having' her first race since last February, when ■ she contested the Railway Handicap at Marton. She was in a prominent position for the greater part of the running, and her connexions must hftve been well satisfied with her effort. Historic is not a sprinter, yet he ran a clinking good race in the Marton Railway Handicap, and had he not bad to be checked just as he was going out of the back stretch, it is possible he would have been closer than sixth at the finish. In any case, it was a very satisfactory effort for a horse intended for distance handicaps, and all going well, he will be hard to beat at Avondale or Auckland. Maui Improving. The Arrowsmith gelding Maui continued the improvement he showed at Dannevirke, by running third in the sprint race at Marton, and as he was a fejlow-jnifferer with Limosin in being carried off the course at the turn it indicates that his next stake is not far off.' Mount Shannon did not get far enough in his race on Saturday to indicate how he would have fared, for he received a bad bump in the first two furlongs. He quickly got going again, but it is probable that it took a lot out of him. At any rate his finishing run, which was so much in evidence when he won at the Wellington Meeting, was lacking. Mount Shannon .was turned out oi) Saturday looking a greatly improved horse. Two three-year-olds who put up very attractive performances at Marton were Pakitere and Fitz Quex, who filled the

first two places in the Spring Hack Cup. Pakitere received the better luck 111 the running, but for which the positions would probably have been reversed. Apart from this they galloped m very promising style. Pakitere, it is almost unnecessary to repeat, is a half-sister to Toxeuma. It would be exceptional if she were to turn out as good as the Arrowsmith gelding, but so far she has an excellent record. As a two-year-old she raced three times for a second, a third, and a win, and now she has started on the winning list at three years. She looks a good prospect for the filly classics. A Good Galloper. Fitz Quex is the best-looking son of Lord Quex that has been seen on a racecourse, and he is a good galloper. In six races as a two-year-old he gradually improved, his last three starts showing two seconds and a win. Bred by Mr E. White, hie dam Morganatic, is a sister to the dam of Kick Off, Bennanee, and Talisker, and half-sister to Black Art. Fitz Quex was raced on lease last season by Mr T. W. Wills, who has been fortunate enough to secure a two-year renewal. The Gisborne tliree-year-old Huntingdon showed plenty of speed in his race at Marton, but he did not run on when the straight was reached. He need not be condemned for his failure. Huntingdon is closely related to other good gallopers, in Royal Routine, Hunting Call, Wallaruh, and Coon Song, their dams all being the progeny of the Sylvia Park mare Sanguinary. The class of hurdler seen out at the Marton Meeting was moderate, but the winner, Make Up, will go a long way in the game. Courageous has a strong finishing run, and it was in evidence at the end of the Marton Handicap on Saturday, but he could, not get up. He would have been better suited by a stronger pace in front. The Paper Money mare, Royal Finance, ran on solidly at the end of the Electric Hack Handicap at Marton, won by Autopay, and is in good form at present. . Taranto got lost in the shuffle at the start of his race on Saturday, but -he came very strongly over the last furlong. With a jump away he would have been in the picture.
