ART SOCIETIES.
CONFERENCE IN WELLINGTON. Delegates representing the main art societies of the Dominion will meet in Wellington in the first week in October to discuss matters affecting the interests of the societies, especially in relation to their exhibitions, according to advice received by the Christchurch 1 Society of Arts on Saturday. At the same time remits from thd various centres* will bo considered. 'lhe more important of the remits arc -tram-Auckland and Otago. Tho Auckland remit concerns the consideration ot a proposal to iorm a New Zea«and Association of Art Societies. The objects of the proposed association will include the arrangement of the dates of all exhibitions and the establishment of an annual circuit' arranged to tacilitato the economic transportation of pictures from one exhibition to the next. It was pointed out recently that there had been some difficulty in this matter, as many of tho pictures in all the exhibitions were sent in by the same artists, and consequently the societies arranged to hold their ex* hibitions at reasonable intervals. Tho Christchurch Society generally holds its annual exhibition at Easter, and as this is not a fixed date, it is liable to affect the arrangements of other societies and prevent them trom fixing a regular time of tho year for their own exhibitions. Under the circuit system an artist trom Wellington, for example, would send his pictures/first to Invercargil), and any remaining unsold would automatically go on to tho other exhibitions unless he desired to withdraw them. . ■ Another suggestion is that the association should appoint a London agency through winch New Zealand works for exhibition in England shall be sent, and which should from time to time arrange for loan exhibitions to be sent to New ?ea'an 1. The Otago remit is that the conrerence shall consider a proposal of the Governor-General's that the introduction of Medici Pnnts for public exhibition in New Zealand be advocated.
