ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. Mr B. J. Thompson, principal of the Ashburton Technical School, left for Wellington Ota Saturday night to attend the annual conference of the Technical Education Association tomorrow. Mr B. Galbraith, chairman of the Board of Managers, leaves for Wellington to-night. The Bev. P. B. Eraser, of Dnnedin, conducted the service at the Baptist Church yesterday morning, and preaehed at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Chnreh in the evening. Miss Agnes Jamieson, formerly of Ashburton, who leaves shortly to take up mission work at Nazareth, spoke at the evening service. Miss M. E. O'Shea, of Ashburton, passed the recent midwifery examination held in Christchurch. Theft Charge. At the Magistrate's Court before Mr A. H. Fenn, J.P., on Saturday, Alfred Gordon Swaney, alias Don Swaney, aged 19 years, was charged with stealing a tobacco pouch valued at 6s, and £5 10s in money and cheques from Joseph Phillip Conll, at Christchurch, on August 28th. On the application of Senior-Sergeant Martin, a remand to Christchurch was granted. Squally Weather. Squally weather was experienced in Ashburton on Saturday. The change set in early in the morning and up to 9 a.m., 12 points of rain had fallen. During the afternoon the wind became stronger and was accompanied by heavy showers of rain. Rugby Football. The only senior matoh played in the Ashburton Rugby competition on Saturday was that between Methven and Rakaia, at Rakaia, Binds having defaulted to AUenton, and wet weather at Mayfleld having postponed the match between Hampstead and the boms . team. METHVEN (9), RAKAIA (8). This match was of a very willing nature between two evenly matched teams, though Rakaia seemed to have the better of the game most of the time. Rain fell intermittently throughout the match. There were several casualties, A. McCormick, Methven, suffering a broken nose, and J. O'Reilly (Rakaia), a broken collarbone. For Methven, Houston Bcored a try and Gillespie kicked two penalties. For Rakaia, O. Davidson scored two tries and converted one. Mr E. Chambers was refetee. Junior Grade —Only two junior matches were set down for decision, but only one was played, Old Bojb having defaulted to Allenton. Playing at Methven, the home team defeated Rakaia by 26 points to 8. The firit half of the match was played in snow, while rain fell at intervals during the second. For Methven, the scorers were T. Lllley, two tries (one converted), and • penalty goal. J. Scott two tries, J. McKendry, G. Cleave, and Zj. Grieve, one try each. For Rtkaia, Greygoose kicked s penalty. The Methven team has not had its line crossed this season. Golf. The Ashburton Golf Club's mixed foursomes match was postponed on Saturday owing to wftt weather. Ladies' Hookey. Owing to Old Gifls defaulting to Lowcliffe on Saturday, the latter team wilt meet Baring square in the final of the Ash* burton Hockey Association's junior B grade competition., The following teamJ have been selected for representative matches to hit played at Ashbtirtoa next Saturday:—

The annual meeting of the Lauriston Presbyterian Church was held in -the Vestry, when the Bev. A. 6. Morrison presided, and presented the congregational report. Mr G. Lilley presented the yearly report on the Sunday School, and Mr C. A. Fyfe, the annual balancesheet. All three indicated a year' of harmony and steady progress. At the conclusion of the meeting suppe? was served by Mesdames Lilley and Pyfe. COLDSTREAM. The Ooldstream Boad Board met, when there were present Messrs 6. Tait (chairman), W. M. Bruce, J. W. Dell, J. C. Guinness, and W. McKeage. A letter was received from the Department of Lands and Survey, stating that all future payments to local bodieswould be made direct to their bank account. The clerk's report stated where repair work had been done during the month.
