NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

Tides. It will be high tide on the beach at 3 p.m. to-day and in the river at 3.44 p.m., and to-morrow at 3.37 p.m. and 3.21 p.m. respectively. Municipal Links. At the last meeting of the advisory committee of the Municipal Golf Links, a letter was received from Mr A. :Hadfield complimenting those responsible for the formation of the links and suggesting extensions. A report submitted by the caretaker showing work which, had been carried out and further work required was read and approved. It was resolved that sketch plans for. a tea-room. be obtained.

Birthday Party. A. very happy party was held at the residence of Mr and Mrs A. M. Chivers, Nelson street, to celebrate the fifth birthday of their grandson, Terence McKeown.. There were present about twenty children. The big birthday cake was. decorated with five kewpies and five coloured candles. Loan Poll. On' Wednesday "next a poll will be takeii for a loan of £1775 for the pur-., chase of a road-making plant for the borough. . South Brighton Croquet Club. On the South Brighton Croquet Club held its initial whist afternoon, there being a good attendance of members and their friends. Prizes were won by Mesdames Sutclifle, Gordon, and Wyatt. At the conelusipn of the tournament, a dainty afternoon tea was served. Those responsible for the 'success of the function included Miss Skipwortli (president), Mrs. Bellamy (secretary), and Mr A. M. Chivers. St. Faith's Church. A. social gathering of the parishioners; of- St. Faith's Church was hold in the Parish. Hall. About eighty people were present and a very enjoyable evening'w;as spent in music, games, and competitions. Songs were given by Miss G. Langridge and Messrs Rowlands and Palk, and violin solos by Mr C. Dunlop. •: Mr A. Dey contributed several humorous recitations. Mrs Curnow and Miss Ward acted as accompanists. Mr G. Palk was M.C. Lecture. On Wednesday, night Miss Smith, a missionary from the diocese of Dornakal, in Southern India, gave an address bel'ore a good audience. The chair was occupied by the Rev. T. M. Curnow. The work of the missions in the Telegu district was described by the speaker, who also exhibited some very beautiful specimens of native lace, and brass work. Free Kindergarten. On Friday next at 3 p.m. a public meeting will be held in the Council Chambers, New Brighton, for the purpose of'enrolling pupils and forming a Mother's Committee. The opening of the Free Kindergarten School will take place on September 22nd. Funds for the. school will be augmented as a result of a well attended and enjoyable card evening held at the residence of the secretary,-Mrs J. Coddington, Richmond terrace, on Thursday evening. Card Evenings. The New Brighton Bowling Club conducted a very successful whist evening on Tuesday there, being an attendance of fifty players. The-prize-winners were: Miss Wilson, Mrs A.-Queree, nnd Messrs G. Cooper and \V. McKenzie. Mrs A. Lawrence and Mr-E. Tilley-.-short were, the successful players at a whist drive conducted by the' New' Brighton Croquet Club 011. Thursday evening. • The New Brighton branch of the Society will benefit as a .result of a well attended card evening, held at the residence of Mrs B. Miles. The prize-winners were Mrs T. Hulme and Mr R. Fox. The offer of Mrs G. Beilby to have the. next similar evening at her residence was accepted with thanks. Stray Dogs. At the last meeting of the Borough Council mention was made of the number of stray dogs in New Brighton. It is understood that a raid on these is to bo made immediately. Plunket Society. At the monthly meeting of the New Brighton branch of the Piunket Society there ' were present:^—Mesdames W. Dean (in the chair), J. H.- Shaw, ,W. Flavel, L. Lawrence, G. Beilby, and Miss Hulme. Apologies were received from Mesdames N. McGillivray, R. S. Pearson, H. Throp,- and S.. Grammar. Tt was decided to send a letter of appreciation to the New Brighton Borough Council for their' generous action in fallowing the Society the am, of tKe rooms rent free for one year. The assistance of Members oh Violet Day was solicited. .... It was resolved to hold the annual dance on September 17th, and a bring and buy evening on September 10th. Nurse Wilson's report for the month showed that 141 adults, 96 babies, and 40 pre-school children had visited'tlie rooms, while 78 homes Had been visited. The general" health of the district was good • at present. ... Power Boat Club. At the annual general meeting of the New Brighton Power Boat Club, to be held next Saturday, the following notice of motion by Mr Friedman, will come up: "That the boat fee be increased to £l, to meet maintenance expenditure on club moorings." Personal. Mr A. Watson, at present on leave, will resume his duties as postmaster On Wednesday next. Miss White returned to Dunedin unexpectedly yesterday. NORTH BEACH. School Committee.
