SUMNER ITEMS.

—-* Forensic Club. The Forensic Club has concluded a very successful season, apart from one or two inter-club debates yet to be held. Eighteen debates have been held, dealing with a'wide range of subjects,, and the average attendance was better than that of last year. A notice-able-feature has been- the excellence of the speaking. So*; far two inter-club debates have been held, one against the Philomath Club, of Christchurch, and the other against Y.M.C.A. Sumner were defeated in the former, and were victorious in the latter. Great interest centres in the inter-borough debate against New Brighton, which is to be held at Sumner. The' debate, which is open to the public, will be on the subject:' "That the. entrance of women into -public and commercial life is detrimental."* The Mayor (Mr W. H. Nicholson) - will preside, and Mr E. W. White will be judge. The Sumner team will bo comprised of Messrs J. E. Tait, J. S.;Barr, and H. G. Bailey. 'A * debate'will be held with the W.E;A.,: the Sumner team, consisting of Messrs J. H. Thomas, E. Lang,-and E. Hullett, will discourse on the-.subject: "That military training should be compulsory in a democratic country." Sumner Civic Federation. XMr J. H. Thomas'presided over a meeting of the executive of the Sumner Civic Federation,, when there were present—Messrs J. A. Booth (Beautifying Association), C. J. Kite (Surf Club), E. T. Chitty (Rugby Club), C. Merry (Cricket Club), and F. J. Adcock (Business Men's Association). A constitution safeguarding the interests of the various bodies concerned was adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr H. C. S. Jamieson; vice-president, Mr A. ,T. Scott; secretary, Mr C. J. Kite; auditor, Mr C. E. Webster; hon. solicitor, Mr J. R. Hampton. Bugby Football. The annual game between teams chosen from Sumner and Kedcliffs will be played next Saturday, after which the team for the iiiter-borough match against Now Brighton, on the 20th instant, will be chosen. Ladies' Hockey Club.

The Redcliffs Ladies' Hockey Club concluded its season's matches on Saturday last, when the A team were successful in defeating Aranui by one goal, scored by Joyce Tooley, to nil. The B team were beaten by Aza, by three to nil. The A team has performed very creditably in the competition, having Scored eight points, and'being only four points behind the leaders. The B team, which is composed of new and young players, gained three points only.

Life-Saving Club. At a meeting of the Executive of the Sumner Surf and Life-Saving Club the question of the purchase of a surf boat, was discussed at some length. Owing, to the uncertain state of the beach and the likelihood of tho club incurring expenses in the protection of its property, the matter was left over in the meantime. It was reported that the club's finances were on a sound footing, there being an overdraft of £l7, which is considerably less than the overdraft of last year. There are, however,. a number of outstanding subscriptions. At present a new constitution, making a clean sweep of. the old rules, is being t 4rawn up* arid this will be placed before the annual meeting of members;' -

Card Evening. ** In order to raise funds for the Plunket Society a very successful five hundred and bridge evening was held at the residence of Mrs Claydon, Gampbell street. The prize-winners were:— Bridge: Mr J. Clark. Five hundred: Mr and Mrs E. T. Chitty, Mrs L. P. Longuet, and Mr A: .Craib. A dainty, supper was served, ajid a hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Claydon for her hospitality. Those "present were Mesdames Claydon, L. P.' Longuet,' Baker, Powe, 'Woods, Chitty, Smith, T. Whitfield, Bailey, Walters, Winskel, Wilkinson, G. Jerard, J. Clark, McLachlan, Hudson, Brown, Coleman, and Newbery, Miss&s Bain and T. Longuet, Messrs .T. Clark, McLachlan,. Baker, Powe, Woods/ Chitty, Smith, J. Bailey, A. Craib, and B. McLachlan. Good Templars, At the weekly, meeting of the Sumner Pride Juveniles, owing to there being no meeting at Bedcliffs, the superintendent, officers, and members of the Ever Onward Temple were present. The chair was taken by the superintendent (Sister Eldridge, C.T.) assisted by Bro. J. Graham; V.T., and other officers. It was announced that the folk squad would resume practice next Wednesday, and all participating were asked' to be in full dress. The older juveniles 31 were asked to' obtain consent to join a Junior Temple, which is to .be opened if sufficient members are forthcoming from Sumner and Redcliffs. The" visitors from Bedcliffs were accorded a hearty vote of thanks for their - attendance. A J very enjoyable programme ; oft'games -Was; gone through and. .a. recitation by Sister Houghton was appreciated- ; Association Football. The following teams will represent the Association Football Club this afternoon:— ; Seniors v. Kaiapoi, Hagley Park, at 2.45 p.m.—Harland, M. Peterson, E. C. Neville, R. 11. Neville, H.. Jackson, N. Peters, L. Barwell, G. Browne, F. Bell, H. Stoheman, Whitehead, or Campbell. Junior .v. Nomads, at Sumner, at 2;45 Hannah, J. McGiffen, J. Lorrimer, H. Trevean, A. Hawker, R. Stoneman, E. Williams, A. L. Bowman, J. Lee, G. Murray, C. T. Elmcs. Hockey. The Redcliffs Hockey Club is in the proud position of being second in the first grade hockey competition, being only half a point behind Trinity, the winners. For a team comprised of so many young players, their record is one deserving of congratulation. Their performances throughout the season have been followed ..witji the keenest interest. ' Rifle Shooting. The members of the Sumner-Ked-clififs Ladies' Miniature Rifle Club fired the second card , this week, for Mrs \V. H. Nicholson's trophy, under sealed handicap conditions-. Sunshine. The amount of sunshine recorded at Clifton. Sumner, for the week lending August 31st was SiO hours 20 Minutes, compared with. 23."hours 25-minutes in the, City. The total for the eighteen weeks ending on the same date was 58! hours 15 minutes, at Sumner, and 508 hours ~45 minutes in the City.
