THE SHIP PEERESS.
TO rUE EDITOB Of TUB PBSSS Sir,—Somo time ago you published a photograph of a group of passengers by the ship Peeress, which you said arrived at Timaru in 1856. The ship Peeress (not Peerless) arrived at Timaru in July, 1870. There are a number of her passengers in Christchurch, among them. 1 think. Mr F. Gabb, of Sydenham, and Mi - E. Hall, of Armagh street It was a miserable Sunday when they came ashore and the major portion were accommodated for a. few days in the "drill" shed on LeCren's terrace. When the first settlers came there were neither roads nor houses, but when the Peeress arrived a number of sod houses had been built, south-east of the Hospital, some ot which are there to-day. This was known as "Peeress" Town. Though 1 was in Timaru 13 vears ahead of the Peeress. I would hardly term myself a "pioneer".—Yours, etc., VICTORY, 1863. September 3rd, 1930. '
