PENYBRYN'S SERVICES. SEAFARERS' APPRECIATION. [THE PRESS Special Service.] WELLINGTON, September -L The following letter was sent to Captain Salvesen, master of the Penybryn, by Captain F. A. The position when you arrived was so serious that one almost dreads to think what might havo happened had you not been on the scene when you were and any more of the bulkheads had carried away. "Captain Toten is a, member of this Guild, and on his behalf and the Committee of Management please accept our very sincere appreciation for the services which you rendered in standing by." Captain Salvesen'a reply is as follows : "Please allow me to express my vol? best thanks for the great honour you bestow upon mo with your letter. J. also beg you to convey this thanks to the members of your esteemed Guild. I can hardly - say how pleased 1 am over the appreciation from gentlemen belonging to my own profession. I am suro that you will understand that when the Penybryn could do no more it was not on account of lack of will, but because circumstances did not permit me to do more."

Tho Post and Telegraph Department report that 273 bags of mail, equivalent to twenty-seven tons in measurement, were transferred to tho Ventura from the Tahiti. The number of letter bags actually lost was ten. No bags of registered mail were lost. SEAMEN OUT OF EMPLOYMENT. WELLINGTON, September 4. In view of the numW of vessels on New Zealand articles at present laid up, Mr T. Walsh, president of the Federated Seamen's Union, says that tho crew of the Tahiti have been thrown out of employment at a very unfortunate time and their prospects of finding positions are far from promising.
