DANCE AT ST. MARY'S.

With the growth of the City, the congregation at St. Mary's Cliurcli, Manchester street north, is rapidly out-growing the present building, and the clergy and peopie of the parish are steauuy preparing for the erection, at no very distant dace, of a new and larger church, 10 meet the requirements of the parishioners. The members of iSt. Mary's Altar Society hope to raise sufliciont money to erect, in the new church, an altar, as a memorial to the priests who have laboured in the parish, and, with that object in view, they arranged a social and dance, which was held last night in St. Mary's Memorial Hall, eft'ecti\ ely decorated for the occasion 1 with multi-coloured streamers and branches of plum blossoms. Mrs Mcintosh received her guests wearing black georgette with chenille trimming. Musical items wore given by the Misses Margaret and Esme Mcintosh. A competition was won by Mrs 11. Tallolt. Mrs Mcintosh gave an account of her trip to Australia with 1 the New Zealand farmers' party, and

showed photographs taken during the tour. Delicious afternoon tea was served. Mrs Tallott thanked the hostess for her hospitality. The proceeds of the afternoon will go to the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union. SKATING CARNIVAL. At Stillwell's Rink, Ferry road, on Tuesday evening, tho Linwood Football Club, in conjunction with Mr Reg Stillwell, held a very successful skating party, which proved to be ono of the most enjoyable functions arranged this season. The Eink was decorated with coloured streamers, the most attractive feature being ah illuminated novelty ship entitled, "Skateland." Over two hundred skaters attended, many learners causing much merriment, while others were very in tho popular pastime. The following skating events were decided: Lucky-spot (Miss Shaw); balloon race (Miss J. Stammers); obstacle race (Mr F. Thompson); Monte Carlo (Miss K. Thompson); the Linwood half-mile championship (Mr Bremner); ladies quarter-mile handicap (Miss Crompton). NEARLY ANOTHER CROSSING ACCIDENT.
