PROGRESS LEAGUE

MEETING OP EXECUTIVE. The executive of the Canterbury Procress League met last night, Mr W. Goss presiding. Regarding the League's desire to co-operate with the Chamber of Commerce in an enquiry into the Port line, the chairman said that no reply lxad been received from the Chamber and, consequently, thev did Hot know what was being done. The matter was referred to the League's Railway Committee. Lees Valley Communications. Mr J. JD. Strachan reported'on the visit recently paid by him and the .organiser (Mr P. R. Climie) to. Lees Valley. He said that the morning papers and their- reporters were to be congratulated on the manner in which, by their excellent reports, they had brought the matter before the public. He gave details of the soldier settlers' requirements in respect of bridges and other matters, and said that a conference had been arranged for the near future to go into the question of finding the amount (in addition to the Highways -Board's contributions) required to build th© bridges. The question of the diversion' of some of the money voted to the Board in respect of what were at one time described as Government roads, would be oonsidered. The report was received, the chairman remarking that more would be heard of the matter after the conference. South Island Main Trunk. The Marlborough Progress League wrote that it had been in communication with Mr E. F. Healey, M.P., regarding the proposed commission (or committee) to be set up to enquire into railway lines under construction, and had _ asked whether there was any likelihood of the commission receiving or" hearing evidence.. Mr Healev had advised. that the League should have all i facts and figures ready in case evidence was taken. "We. must be ready to protect our railway project" to the last,'*" he wrote. He undertook v to keep the League advised of the committee's itinerary. The League, suggested that its representatives should inspect the Wharanui end. and the Canterbury League's representatives the Parnassus end on Saturday, the 13th inst., and that the representatives of both Leagues should confer at Kaikoura the same evening.' The matter was left in. the hands of Mr! Strachan and the organiser, with power to act. .
