COUNTY COUNCILS.

MACKENZIE. 'At the monthly meeting of the Mackenzie County Council, held at' Fairlie on Monday last, there were present: Messrs C. J. Talbot (chairman), A. IV Campbell, F. J. Car-* ter, T. J. Seay, G. Murray, H. H. Fisher, W. T. Smith,.and W. Scott. The chairman said' he had been in touch with the South Canterbury Chamber of Oom--1 iaerce in regard to the visit of the Commission enquiring into branch railway lines. It was considered advisable to say nothing about the Waimate and Fairlie branch lines to the Commission, as it was not thought that these services would be interfered with. The chairman of the Finance Committee (Mr A. F. Campbell) reported that the debit balance was £2134 13s lOd. That day's pay-sheet totalled £1442 4s. Beceipts for the month amounted to £964 16s lOd. A petition, wsa received from eleven Fairlie ratepayers asking that steps be taken to prevent damage being done to their hedges by . milch cows being allowed to eat them when being driven to and from sections in different parts of the town. It was' decided to point out to the offenders the necessity for cattle being kept off the footpaths. • The chairman advocated. the purchase of a new lorry to complete' the Council's programme. They must maintain their roads with metal, and the present method seemed to bo very satisfactory. Mr Murray said it appeared to him,that the Council should try contract carrying of metal from the crusher. ■ \ The chainnan gave notice of _ motion that at next meeting the Council consider the purchase of a new lorry. Mr Smith, drew attention to the practice of some persons Bt Mount Nessing in "lifting" gates from the Council's property. More than one gate had been stolen, and it was time the Council took action. The engine? reported .that to fence tho Cattle Valley road would be too costly, as well as inadvisable, in that such fences had been a source of mufch litigation in North Island counties where accidents had taken place.
