THE ART GALLERY.

CLEARING THE SITE. A step nearer toward# the establishment of the new Art Gallery in Christchurch was taken yesterday morning, when workmen commenced to clear the section of land at the rearof the Museum, where the City Council has decided that the "Gallery should be placed. The whole of the site will bo ready for the next development by the end of this week. * Under instructions from the Christchurch Domains Board Which, in turn, has been advised by the City Council, several members of the Gardens staff and a few of" tbe unemployed are engaged on the work. Yesterday all the hydrangeas wereremoved, and to-day attention will be given to the rhododendrons. All plants that can be removed with safety are being replanted in the western portion of the Gardens, at the rear of the tea kiosk. Some of the bushes are very massive and two horses and a sledge are being used to transport them to 'their new site. It is hoped that a catalpa—a valuable timber—and a number of lilacs will be saved, but it' is very probable that a> big pine and a handsome bluegum will meet their fate as commercial timber.
