CYCLING.

PAPANUI SPORTS CLUB. The Papanui Amateur Sports Club continued its series of cycle races on Saturday afternoon. The course was around the usual block, at Harewood, which was traversed six times, making a distance of thirty miles. With the exception of Sawyer's Arms road, which had roceived a coating of shingle, the roads were in good order for racing, but the strong easterly wind made the riding hard 1 coming down Harewood road, and consequently the times were slightly slower than those of the previous week. The race attracted thirty-f our entrants, and among them were several new riders, also P. J. Grose, who was on scratch, and his younger brother, T. A. Grose, who made such a good showing last year. The limit riders wore receiving a concession of llmin, with a break of SJmin before the socond bunch was dispatched. Two of the scratch riders, 11.I 1 . J. Grose and J. b. Richards, were trying out a new gearing arrangement. Through not being accustomed to the apparatus Richards mot with trouble before he had gone a couple hundred yards, his chain coming off, causing him to lose fully half a minute. Grose also had the same trouble before the lap was completed. A. Hands led the limit riders at the end of the first lop, covering the distance in lSmiu 13sec. The riders off the 11 and 2jmin marks covered the Jap in 13min ISsec, and W. F. Wilcockson and L. J. Pearce (scr) took 13min 47sec. J. L. Richards followed 23sec later, having picked up nearly lOscc of the time lost through the chain trouble. Groso passed a minute later. Hands led again at the end of the second lap, but the following bunches were gradually closing up. During the lap the 2i and Simia markers had bunched, led by H. C. Basher, and were travelling at 25 miles per 'hour. At this stage h. J. Pearce dropped out, leaving Wilcockson by himself, Richards was now only, Usee behind Wilcockson, and Grose 65see behind Richards. With half the distance covered the second contingent were only 85sec behind the leaders. A minute later the 6min riders passed, and about half a mile behind them H. C. Basher (21min) headed a big bunch, consisting of riders from the 21, 3J, and 41min marks. The three scratch men covered the lap with remarkable evenness of speed, Richards still being lOsec behind Wilookson, and Grose 55sec behind Richards. With ten miles to go the,two leading bunches had joined, exactly a minute ahead of the 6min riders, who had a lead of 20sec on Basher and company. During this lap Richards had overtaken Wilcockson, but lmin ISsec went before Grose passed. At the bell half the riders had dropped out. I. J. Lester led the first bunch, being closely followed by A. Hands, V. Ayres, and J. Winterburne. Twenty seconds later the second bunch passed, with R. Richards and H. Basher in front. Wilcockson and J. L. Richards did not pass until nearly seven minutes afterwards, with Grose over a minute later. Half-way round the lap the second bunch caught the leaders, and they kept together unti] the .finish. H. O. Basher came to the front about 200 yards from the line and won by a lenyth from Lester. J. Donaldson, who secured third place, was about a foot away. The following are the placings:— H. C. Basher (2}min), Slmin 18sec ..1 I. J. Lester (7Jmin), 86min 34 l-ssec .. 2 i ,7. Donaldson (7Jmm), 86min 34 2-Ssec 3 J. Winterburne (7£min), 86min 35sec .. 4 J. Wilson (31min), 82min 21sec .. 6 R. Richards (2smin), 81min 23sec .. 6 ! V. Ayres (7smin), 86min 55sec .. 7 A. C. Hands (llmin), Slmin 20sec .. 8 H. C. Basher (2imin) secured fastest time, and R. Richards (2imin) second fastest.

MAIREHAU RACE. The Mairehau Sports Club held a twentyfive miles road race on Saturday afternoon. Twenty-three riders started, with AV. L. White, E. A. McKaskell, C. J. Sowden, and J. H. Silvester on scratch. The limit was 7}min. A close finish resulted as follows: V. Turner (6Jmin), time 6Umin 4fsec... 1 R. 6. Watson (6|min), 69min 44sec l-ssec 2 0. Johnstons (4)min), 67min 44 2-ssec 3 L, Mortlock (4}fflin), 67min 44 8-.ssec 4 G. Horris (7jmin), 70min 44 4-ssec .. 5 N. H. Goodman (4Jniin), 68min 15sec .. 6 W. G. NEW GEARING SYSTEM. A new gearing system, known as the triplex gears, is now being adopted by Bome riders of push cycles. The new gearing system consists of three different sired sprockets in the back wheel, with gears ranging from 70 to 100. The chain is about six inches longer than that of an ordinary cycle, the slack being taken up by a grooved jockey pulley . and a sprocket on a Blide bar. The change is made by a bowden wirs control, and when the lever iB pushed forward the chain is slackened, and a spring at the back of the jockey pulley carries the chain o/er sideways to the sprocket on the back wheel. The movement repeated carries the chain on to the third sprocket. When the control lever is pulled backwards the spring at the back of the jockey pulley is compressed, and tha chain is carried from the big sprocket on tho back wheel to the smaller one. The machines on which the gears aro fitted have free wheels, and according a to a well-known amateur cyclist some practice is required to make the change successfully. Mr Frank Grose says the apparatus is tho same as was used in t'he Tour de France Race, and it is said that it would be a decided advantage in the Round-the-Gorges Race.
