BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION
MEETING AT SUMNER. Mr 8. K, Bassett presided over a meeting of the Sumner Beautifying and Beach Improvement Association on Saturday evening. Tho secretary reported that fourteen chains of planting had been done on the reserve alongside / the Zig-Zag at Clifton; also that the lower three sections of the Zig-Zag had been planted, chiefly in native shrubs; Scarborough Park had been cleaned up. A privet hedge had been planted at the tramway terminus shrubtexy, and two plots at the Cave Rock had been prepared in readiness for grassing. R.S.A. labour had cost £2O, including a aubsidy of £lO from the'R.S.A., and £5 had been expended on fcha purchase of native shruMk A good deal of labour had been given voluntarily on the Zig-, Zag, and Mr James Young, of the Botanic Gardens, had materially assisted # in carrying out the season's operations Letters were received from the Borough Council (1) stating that it was not intended to lay out any further areas east of those already laid out at Cave Rock corner, but suggesting that the line of Norfolk Island pines nearest the sea wall should be extended to a point opposite the sea wall; (2) that the engineer had reported against the proposal to utilise the vacant plot to the west of the tramway bridge. 'The secretary said that he had bespoken six Norfolk Island pines for planting as suggested; effective protection was available for the young trees. It was decided, if funds permitted, that £6 be expended on straightening up and screen-dressing the paths on the reserve at Cave Rock. A letter was received from Mr E. Archbold approving of the Association's work on the Zig-Zag and promising future assistance.
