MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. Mr S. J. Gudsell, now of Toronto, but formerly of Ashburton, Is spending a few days here. Infections Diseases. Only one case of an infectious nature was reported to the County Health Inspector during the past week,' it being a case of T. 8., from Methven. New Traffic Bridge. The work on the erection of the new traffic bridge over the Ashburton river has been progressing more rapidly during the last few weeks. Although a large number of men are engaged ©a the decking work of the bridge, mor* attention has been paid to driving the piles, as it was considered necessary that the pile-driving gear should be out of the actual bed of the river before the spring floods. The construction of the piers and the decking is much slower work, the former having to be allowed to set before the decking can be proceeded with, and therefore it is necessary that the piers be constructed three or four spans ahead of the super-struc-ture or decking work. An Enquiry. A letter addressed to the "Lord Mayor of Methven" has found its way to the Ashburton County Council office and contains an enquiry from a resident of Barry Dock, Ireland, for information concerning the whereabouts of James Burris, who came to New Zealand many years ago, and commenced work on the Rangitata railway bridge, and was last heard of at Methven. He had three sons—George, Sam, and James Burris. Vital Statistics. The vital statistics in the Ashburton Registration District for last month show a general decrease compared with those for the corresponding month last year. The figures are as follows, those for the corresponding month last year being given in parentheses:—Births 28 (30); deaths, 12 (19); marriages, 7 (8). Water-Race Shortage. A good "fresh" in the Ashburton river, but more especially in the north branch, will somewhat alleviate the anxiety felt by farmers, who were dependent on the river for water for their races. The uneasiness was more evident in the Winchmore and part of the Greenstreot districts, where farmers relied more upon the north branch for their supply. The stream during one period this winter was absolutely dry, an occurrence which was unprecedented, and farmers had to divert the water from the south branch, and from several big races which run from the Rakaia through the Methven and Lyndhnrst districts. If a warm summer is experienced, with long spells of dry weather, it is feared that there will be a general shortage of water in races throughout the County, as there is an exceptionally light covering of snow on the hills. Bankruptcies. Three bankruptcies were filed during August. None were filed during the i corresponding month last year. | ' Band Concert Broadcast. ! The second concert to be broadcasted in Ashburton "was held in his Majesty's Theatre last evening, when a programme of music was given by the Ashburton Silver Band, assisted by local artists. The proceeds were in aid of the Band's Uniform Fund. A first-class programme was presented, those contributing being Mrs W. R. Feathoraton (soprano), Mrs Sydney Bryant (contralto), Mr R. J. Laureson (baritone), Miss Enid Thompson (elocution), Mesdames H. J. Constable and F. J. Chambers, Messrs K. Norrish and E. R. Hopwood (quartet). Foreign Mission Sunday. The former wan conducted by the Rev. R. B. Tinsley and a solo, "Just For To-day," was given by Miss Alva Myers (Kaitangata). The Rev. W. A.
