PARK FOR RICCARTON.

PUBLIC MEETING TO BE HELD.

A further step in the endeavour to obtain sufficient land for a park in the Riccarton borough was made on Saturday evening, when a meeting of the Parks Committee and representatives of the Riccarton Citizens' Association decided to hold a public meeting in mid-September to promote public interest. Mr H. S.S. Kyle. M.P., and speakers from various sports and other interested organisations will be invited to be present. It is hoped to get a favourable motion from the meeting, to give the Council something to go on, so that it may reasonably be asked to sanction a poll on the question of obtaining the area which is some six acres in extent, and is near the Wharenui School. This adjoins the area already set aside by the Metropolitain Trotting Club in exchange for the original park site ofr Knston street. The total area will then be 10-acres, which will be adequate for its purpose as a sports and recreation ground. The acquisition of this land would necessitate the levying of a very small rate, stated Mr E. W. Brightling' on Saturday. On an average valuation of £3OO it should not amount to more than 3s per year, which was a very small item. It was necessary to look ahead and to, consider the facts that this area was the last one suitable for a park and was well situated in the Riccarton borough.
