, Vital Statistics, 'lha following births- and deaths were registered at Lyttelton during the month of August. The figures for the corresponding month last year are given in parentheses:—> Births 4, (4), deaths 4 (5), marriage notices 3 (3). Tally Clerk Injured. Joseph Flynn, a tally clerk, received injuries to the head' on Saturday morning through being struck by a piece of timber whilst working at the steamer Raisdale. He was conveyed to the Christchurch Hospital for treatment, but his condition is not serious. Complimentary Social. Lyttelton railwaymen, shipping officials, and other associates of Mr J. Macdonald, head foreman on the Lyttelton railway staff, tendered him a complimentary social and smoke' concert in the Railway Social Hall on Saturday evening on tho eve of his retirement on superannuation. Mr A. Napier presided over' a large attendance. Apologies for absence were. received from the harbourmaster (Captain T.' M. Hunter) and Messrs J. Garrard, J. Hasmussen, and J. Tibbie. During the evening the stationmaster, Mr T. Stephens, on behalf of the Lyttelton railway staff, presented Mr Macdonald with a leather suit-case, a travelling rug, and a case of pipes, and also asked his acceptance of a hat-box for Mrs Macdonald. Mr Stephens spoko of the guest of honour's long service and the excellent relations which existed between him and all with whom his work brought him in contact. Mr Macdonald suitably replied. Toasts honoured were "Shipping and Outside' Firms," proposed by Mr H. Mills and responded to by Messrs R. Envin and Proutit; "Superannuated Members," proposed by Mr H. Burns and responded to by Mr D. J. Comer; and "Our Guest," proposed by Mr T. Stephens and responded to- by Mr Macdonald. Items were given as follows: —Violin solo, Mr H. Bernand; recitation, Mr A. Baker; songs, Messrs W. Couch and B. O'Connor. Gun Club. The fifth annual competition for the G.A. Cup took place on the club's ground, Officers' Point, on Saturday. It was a very bad day for shooting, with a cold north-east wind, which made tho clays very hard to hit. It was the best competition shot for the cup. Mount Herbert winning by four birds. Mr S. W, Mcßurney, club captain, presented the cup to the winners, and then called for three cheers for the C.A, Company, the donors of tho cup. Scores were as follows: HERBERT GUN CLUB. W. As a fitting conclusion to a successful season, members of the Lyttelton Men's Amateur Swimming Club held their first annual dance on Saturday evening at the Excelsior Hall. There was a largo attendance of members and local supporters, beside' many from the various swimming clubs 1 The dance was a most enjoyable function,' Bnd reflected much credit on the organising committee. The dance music was provided by Mr Bert Herdman's Orchestra. During the evening various novelty dances l enlivened tho proceedings. In the absence of the Mayor (Mr W. T.. roster), who was unable to attend owing to a previous engagement in Christchurch,' Mr J. Mcllroy, chairman of the committee, made the presentation of trophies won by members during the past season. Mr Mcllroy - congratulated the club and the winners-of -the various swimming events. He trusted that members would again rally during the) coming swimming season in giving their support both by training and competing in tho club races. He also wished to thank all donors of trophies as well as those who gave valuable assistance - to tho club in many ways. Trophies were awarded as follows:—Mr O. Mazey's trophy, A.
